About the Author
Steve Kaffen is a long-term member of the famed Explorer’s Club. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Russia and later as the Peace Corps’ Assistant Inspector General for Auditing over its operations in 70 countries. He has monitored elections for the UN, consulted on UNICEF’s programs, written the World Cup USA’s operating procedures, reviewed National Endowment for the Arts grants, and managed a Coca-Cola bottling plant in the middle of the Russian winter, without heat!

Hoping there's a sequel!

The key to the charm of this very well written book is the fact that Steve Kaffen's journey starts at a time, the mid-1980's, when China and all Asia were just opening up to American travel. His first impressions and their adventurous freshness were a rarity then, and now, even more so, when the world is just a push of a button away. The encounters are funny, innocent, curious, with a sense of uncharted territories on each side. The Chinese, at the time, for example, were amazed to see him writing in his notebook with his left hand, and lined up to have him show them how to do it. Individual differences and natural proclivities were apparently discouraged by the Maoist schooling of the day.
Mr. Kaffen characterizes deftly, has excellent pace and clarity. The scenes unfold beautifully, fully visualized, yet not bogged down in details. They are funny and telling, and are living models of positive intercultural exchange. The book is built to do positive work in the world.
There is also a tease of very short quotes from the book with page references inserted just before the title page. These act as holograms for the whole, a quick keying in to the style and texture of the book. I've never seen this feature anywhere before. It makes for a great bookstore browse.
Mr. Kaffen starts Unexpected Journey with the words, "I quit!" He leaves an established corporate position for four years of uncharted travel, with no clear plan after that. In his accompanying bio, at the end of the book, we eventually find him reviewing countries, first hand, for the Peace Corps. But not in this volume.
Here he starts in Suzhou, China, to study Chinese, and then travels the country further, followed by jaunts to Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Bali, Sulawesi, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, and Singapore. He ends his book with a revisit to his starting point, and includes his own photos of China then and now.
Each chapter is self-contained, as are its subtitled subdivisions. The book is one that gives more energy than it takes.
Hopefully this will be only the first in an ongoing series. Certainly Mr. Kaffen's got the experience, the perspective, the skills, the sensitivity to pull a series off, and keep us interested.

Remarkable Story Filled with Human Warmth, Wonderful Encounters, and Interesting Experiences

You know this book is going to be special from the first page, which contains quotes of fascinating interactions the author has with the local people as he travels through each country. It is a "total package" in that it includes not only the text but also his photos from all the countries, and photos twenty-five years apart for China. The most interesting is the terracotta warriors excavation site at the beginning (a big mound of dirt) and a full excavation 25 years later. The writing is vivid and the pace is fast-moving but not rushed. Some of the adventures seem almost unbelievable, but are presented with such detail, that you can visualize them unfolding; the author's truly remarkable travel and professional bio lends credibility to his writing. Chartering a missionary flight into Borneo's far interior, and attending a village church service where all the local kids had guitars made for them by the village guitar maker were great. But, I think I most liked the encounters - they are presented without judgment and with human warmth. I liked, for example, the encounter with the boy in Chengdu in China whose father had bought him an expensive short wave radio so he could have an outside view of the world and learn English on the BBC. As a teacher working with young people all my life, I recommend this book for all ages and particularly young people, as an academic and learning experience and as they contemplate their own future journeys.

Successfully Applying Problem-Solving to Travel

There is an overlooked dimension to this interesting book, the author's continuous use of problem-solving to achieve his travel objectives. The author identifies and sizes up the opportunity and related challenges, plans the approach and executes it, experiences the results, and then moves on to the next opportunity. And he documents it all in his notebooks. There are a great number of examples of this as the author moves from place to place and country to country. Many of the situations are rather complex as they deal with unknowns and variables such as transportation, accessibility by foreigners, and local customs and cultures. I enjoyed reading how the author customized his approach to each situation, and how he enlisted the help of the local people. Maybe it’s my background as a CPA, but I see this book as a succession of case studies of applying problem-solving techniques to achieve a memorable travel experience. In reading the author’s professional background, I think that’s just what he did, and with remarkable results and a wonderful story.
