A meditation on art and its creation, Fluxion celebrates the life and oeuvre of Kumari Nahappan, a conceptual artist known for her bold and unique paintings and sculpture. Based mainly in Singapore, Kumari's artistic practice has spanned over two decades. She is well known for her monumental public art sculptures and installations, including the giant bronze chili pepper, Pedas Pedas, at the National Museum of Singapore, the Saga at Changi Airport, the Nutmeg at ION Orchard, Singapore, You and Me at GTower, Kuala Lumpur, Pembungaan at OUE Bay-front, Singapore, and most recently Happy Tango at Changning District, Shanghai in 2011.
Fluxion is lavishly illustrated and includes full-color reproductions of both her early and later works, over 50 full-page plates of her more significant pieces, and a color catalog of her works. Fluxion introduces the reader to the full spectrum of Kumari's achievements in both painting and sculpture, in works of art that not only excite the viewer but encourage us to see the world in a whole new way.

About the Author
T.K. Sabapathy, born in 1938, is Singapore’s foremost art historian, curator and critic. For four decades, he has devoted his life to the research, documentation and support of contemporary visual arts in Singapore and Malaysia.
He has been a lecturer of art history at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological Institution andNational Institute of Education.

Contemporary Artist in Singapore - Evolution of Painting and Sculptures

Kumar Nahappan may be a serious artist, but her image of two chilies with bright yellow books and flailing hands, entitled "These Boots are Made for Walking," shows she also has a very keen sense of humor. A former interior designer with an education in interior design studies at the Willesden College of Technology in London, she worked in interior design and space planning for several years in Malaysia before moving to Singapore and studying art at a graduate program at LaSalle University. So it should not have been a complete surprise when her graduation show was Singapore's first art installation. (My favorite of her installation is Monument, done with hanging textiles tiles in tumeric - unlike ther other installations and paintings it didn't show up in my Bing search.)
Nahappan's drawing on Hindu traditions is intriguing, as is LaSale's decision to open her thesis exhibition to the public with the idea that it promoted the mutual respect among different religious traditions in Singapore. Art in Southeast, at least as Sabapathy depicts it, plays a deeper role, and, in fact, Nahappan is explicit, especially in her public art, at wanting to make art that connects with people rather than intimidates them.
Fluxion is the story of her art and a bit of the story of art in Southeast Asia, good on her ideas, execution -- including a lot on materials -- and also some good material on public art. The quality of the book and its reproductions is outstanding, which is important because her abstract painting are very subtle. T.K. Sabapathy, who seems to have written about most of the art in Southeast Asia during his decades-long career, writes that he has been only intermittently aware of Nahappan so this book was an opportunity to delve into her work and her ideas.
He adds an exploratory interview with Nahappan at the end. Her work is stunning, and the book's quality of reproductions is excellent. Do a search for her and see -- her sculptures come across well even on a screen; her paintings do much better in the book.
