About the Author
Paul Wagar trained as an actor in London, England, and worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Stratford Festival in Canada, and the New Shakespeare Company, with whom he toured India and Sri Lanka. He was the Artistic Director of Toronto Repertory Theatre, Philadelphia Area Repertory Theatre, and Ark Theatre Company in Los Angeles. He taught for nine years in Oxford, England for the British American Drama Academy, was head of Voice at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, teaches in Hollywood for Theatre of Arts, and is an Associate Adjunct Professor at UCLA.

Good for the beginner or actor in training. Expensive.

While the author's credentials and experience cannot be denied, his book unfortunately reads as choppy at times and offers little in-depth detail or new insight into voice, speech and text. On the other hand, the book is very straight-forward and to the point, which I think may be good for beginners or actors who are early in training. For most actors who have had some solid training in voice, speech and text,(one or two years of training including some phonetics) this book would likely be basic.
I was particularly disappointed in the high cost (compared to other quality books on these subjects) and the size of the font. I thought that the high cost would be reflected in the quality and depth of material, but upon receiving it, I felt that I got less than what I paid for. The font is large (perhaps font 14 or even 16), the lines appear to be double spaced, (a lot of white space here) and includes several oversized photos. This all takes up precious real estate on the page. Obviously this makes it easy to read, but again, I did feel duped into thinking that I would receive twice as much material. Label should read: "Extra Large Font" or some such so the consumer is aware. If the book was written in a normal font (font 12) and the layout was more economical in use of space, it likely would come in at 100 pages or so; in my opinion, the price is very high for what you get. I do think the book is worth having if you buy the Kindle version, but if you want the paperback, you can get better material for much less.
What Wagar does do, which is unique (as far as I know), is to provide material on voice, text, phonetics/speech and a Classic American dialect all in one book, and he manages to do it concisely (no frills or bonus material here). The downside is that with such a broad range of material, he doesn't do it justice. The cost, layout and basic material made me want to give 2 stars, but given the range of material, I would have to give it 2 and half (no option to do that here). As a professional actor and teacher, I certainly don't mind paying for good quality material, but I don't think that my rating would change even if the price was significantly less. Purchase if you want one resource of basic material on these subjects and don't mind paying extra for it.

Useful text with no fluff or filler -- great gift for actors (aspiring or established)

No filler, fluff, or pointless anecdotes -- just useful, direct, clearly well-informed info from clearly skilled and experienced actor/director/teacher with impressive credentials. Price seems miniscule compared to cost of author's class at UCLA or Oxford University. A valuable addition to any actor's (or public speaker's) reference library to learn and brush up skills. Also a great gift to aspiring actors. (I gave two as gifts and got great feedback from both recipients.)
