Jordan's book has several commendable points. His overview of the Revolution pre-trial is cogent and useful to newcomers. His portrayal of the King's last months are evocative and poignant. Jordan also gives a thorough account of all the various arguments employed during the debates. The narrative stumbles a little with his negative characterization of the Girondins and a laudatory one of the Jacobins as better caretakers of the Revolution. This despite the Girondins being sacrificed to the mob by the jacobins' fear and their subsequent government abandoning both Republican and Democratic legacies and embracing the totalitarian terror. Would the Girondins' moderation in retrospect really have had a comparable negative impact? His final chapter on the obliteration of Louis' remains is oddly joyful. maybe he should have written a hagiography of Marat. Overall worth reading.

It's hard for me to believe that there are few books on King Louis XVI in light of the French Revolution. This is indeed an interesting look at King Louis- Jordan uses narrative to play out the history of the French Revolution and its aftermath. It was a slow read, but well written.

Judicial murder or exercise in liberty?

This is a great companion piece to 'The Fourteenth of July' by Christopher Prendergast, an account of the storming of the Bastille, the key event initiating the French revolution in 1789, two years prior to the trial of Louis XVI. More than any other history, I was intrigued by the author's account of how he came to write the book as well as his process.
Twice Jordan cites the irony of Louis starting the revolution by calling the Estates-General in 1789. There is the inevitable comparison to other historical regicide episodes, Mary QofS, Charles I, and Nicholas II. The history starts with the invasion of the Tiulleries and subsequent massacre of the Swiss guards, followed by the escape to Varenne and recapture. The book is very good on individual character studies of the king, Mirabeau, Marat, Danton, Robespierre, Saint-Just, Condorcet and many others. Lesser lights play fascinating roles in the political, legal and military drama. It's not so easy to work out the political leanings and affiliations of each.
Though Louis was not politically astute, Jordan's depiction of Louis shows him presenting a courageous, intelligent defense. He was hardly the tyrant of popular opinion. He presents the legal conundrum of having paid for the crime of dictatorship by abdication without any charges stemming from action afterwards.
Clearly the intent was to indict the monarchy rather than the monarch. Eventually he was charged with the nebulous crime of disrespecting the revolution seemingly a superfluous charge.
The book emphasizes the politics of the Girondin-Jacobin struggle. The account of the trial is initially very interesting, though eventually bogging down in minutia.
I found interest in the king's lawyers, especially Raymond DeSeze, as well as the details of his defense. It was a very close vote on guilt, penalty and declining to allow an appeal to the people. There is an impressively detailed but tedious account of voting patterns. It's not clear why the original Girondin majority couldn't secure either an appeal or banishment for the king. There is nothing about the subsequent trials for the queen M-A or his sister Elisabeth. In a sort of reverse terror, M. Lepelitier, a delegate who voted for execution was assassinated in a Paris cafe. It's interesting that the king's cousin the Duke of Orleans, a second estate delegate, voted for death. Tom Paine proposed banishing the king to America. Presumably that met with approval of ambassador to France, Gouvernor Morris. Curiously, there is no mention of the possibility that the king would form a focal point for rebellion with a view to restoring the monarchy. The execution was very nearly on the January anniversary of the similar death of Charles I in 1649.
World reaction in the book is limited to Pope Pius VI declaring Louis a “royal martyr” and the battles of Valmy and Jenappes, that set the stage for French military dominance.
The trial established the predominance of Robespierre and the mountain faction of the Jacobins. Jordan tries to leave open the question of whether the trial opened the door to the reign of terror. The book seems to show that it did.
This is very informative, maybe the new classic reference, on an important under reported episode of history.

About the Author

Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard. Shawn has become one of the world's leading expert on the connection between happiness and success. You don't have to read it first!

I'll start with the disclaimer that I've read Shawn Achor's The Happiness Advantage several times before coming to this book, and my rating is largely based on the differences between the books. The Happiness Advantage provides a slew of research and tools which are easy to implement and highly effective. You can adopt any of these at any point in your life and start seeing immediate results. I consider it one of the best books on understanding happiness and finding more of it in your life.

Before Happiness takes a different approach. It lays out and recommends a more structured plan to follow that looks a lot like other success formulas - understanding your values, setting goals, and then using various techniques to reach them. This is a much broader and bigger picture approach designed to shape your life around the things that really matter. While this approach has value it's much harder to implement for many people (including myself).

The books approach the subject very differently, and some people are more likely to get more out of the first book. So don't be fooled by the title - read the earlier book and decide for yourself!

Basic Motivation Skills 101

Wowza. As I'm writing this review, I see I purchased this book in May 2014 and here it is March 2017 --- that's how long it took me to finally get around to reading this book.

I remember seeing Shawn on Oprah and that's what prompted me to order his book. I started reading it today and I'm done. I pretty much skimmed the whole thing as it was basic common sense. Here's the gist: find the positive in everything and learn from it, set attainable goals and don't make assumptions about anything or anyone. The End.

Best Read this Year!

This book is a sequel to his other Happiness Book and is a must-read. Both books have changed my life day to day. I am more satisfied with my job, my family, and my life. I am excited to get up in the morning--and that had not been the case for quite awhile. His writing style is casual and easy to read--even though he is extremely educated. He weaves anecdotal with solid research to prove each concept. Thank you Shawn for changing lives!

About the Author
Ted Williams died in September 2005 having just finished this book. He is the author of The Reservation (also published by Syracuse University Press), a modern classic of Iroquois literature. Debra Roberts is a documentary filmmaker, book editor, theater director and performer, dancer, choreographer, and creative consultant. She lives outside Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband and family.

I have worked with Mr, West for over five years and I have always struggled with my ability to take tests. I have always understood the material but always struggled with the ability to interpret the questions being asked. By following Mr. West core principles of test taking (Language, Positive/Negative, Place in Order, Broad Brushstroke, and the CIA method.) I have been able to sharpen my test taking skills to were I no longer fear test but welcome the challenge to seek higher level certification within the Cyber Security arena. When used by themselves or sometimes in conjunction you will find an efficient way to "cut the fat" out of the questions and focus on the primary answers that the test givers are desiring. I will be taking the most challenging test to date for myself and am feeling more confidant about my ability to pass my up and coming tests in the future. I thank Mr. West for taking the time out of his very busy and hectic schedule to produce a rock solid book that focuses on refined testing fundamentals that really work if used correctly. I recommend this book with 5 stars because of the impact on my personal ability to face test head on. Thanks Jim.

What is especially useful is that the walks are indexed by distance, country, overland, urban, mountain, heritage and coastal & shoreline. My new best friend in my purse

I finished reading the book, the vicious cycle, and it REALLY helped me get my diet started. I am not a cook and this new way of planning had me sooo confused. I lived on slices of cheese, eggs, bell peppers and almond butter in Tupperware. This I could handle. Now I carry my book in my purse, so I am never without it. I use the "legal list of foods" for everything I buy. Just yesterday, I was buying garlic and was trying to choose paste, fresh, or whole. I checked the ingredients in paste and found citric acid and soyoil. I checked my book and no soy products allowed. Saves me a lot of stress. Buy the paperback as it is small and light and easy to carry all the time. As far as the actual reading of the book material. I understood a lot of it and that was helpful. Some of it was just way over my head. I think it is ok to skim over the whys of molecules, etc.I could not find this on ebook for the ipad, only the kindle. Kind of glad though as it is easier to grab the book than bring it all up for an ebook.

Fabulous!!! Makes it easy and delicious, and broadens our menu. Makes the SCD protocol more fun and "normal" too. Nice large print, with some encouraging photos too. The SCD diet has made a gigantic difference in our son's gut health and brain fog.

Very rarely do I find many recipes in one book that I really use. This one was an exception. I have made so many of the recipes and they are so easy to make. Highly recommended book.

Inspired by the author's meeting with James Irwin, an astronaut who walked on the moon in 1971, this picture book introduces places its young narrator at the center of a story about a lunar landing. A boy imagines himself sharing his grandfather's trip to the moon, the subject of his favorite bedtime story. After blasting off from Florida, the pair drives around the moon in a buggy, collects dust and rock samples, and erects an American flag. Gaffney's (Chuck Yeager) simple, serviceable prose converts scientific details into experiential descriptions, as in this account of dropping a rock: "It falls in slow motion to the ground. Dust splashes up around it and falls back like water." The description of the sky?"There is no air on the moon to make the sky blue. Space and black sky come right down to the ground"?carries a similar sense of wonder. Root's (Wan Hu Is in the Stars) watercolor and gouache paintings create striking lighting effects, whether for cozy bedtime scenes in the boy's room, the bright billowing pastel clouds of the take-off or the still dim surface of the moon. Root captures especially well the camaraderie between the two moon walkers, their shared excitement visible even beneath space helmets. This book makes a momentous and remote event engagingly accessible. Ages 4-up.

Kindergarten-Grade 2?This book was written as a tribute to Apollo astronaut James Irwin. In the story, Grandpa was an astronaut who walked on the moon. During the evening bedtime story, he and his grandson imagine going there together. The text is perfect, reflecting no doubt the most frequently asked questions of those who have experienced space travel, and moonwalking in particular: Where does the capsule sit on the rocket? How long does it take to get to the moon? What does the surface of the moon look like? Root's watercolor and gouache paintings focus on the factual information and yet the art has the feeling of an imaginary experience and captures the wishful thinking of a curious child. Emerging readers can make this experience their own because the visual clues and the vocabulary are so carefully scripted. The premise of fondly recalling the public's total attention to the first manned space flights and reliving it through the intergenerational episode may not work for all audiences since the child is so easily transported to the historic event?leaving behind the uniqueness, the training, and the risk involved. Nonetheless, the appealing story and breathtaking pictures make an attractive addition that should spark many flights of fancy.?Kathy East, Wood County District Public Library, OH
