Great book with some of the best basic information

I have been a back country visitor for some time now, I have taken several formal avalanche courses, and this book is one of the best and easy to read guides for the basic wanderer. As with similar "Allen & Mike" literature, illustrations are fun and understandable by anyone, pretty much any age, and for someone just starting out you will more than likely take away very healthy information. I would practice some of these techniques PRIOR to any large excursion/activity, and let it be a refresher after you have taken a formal course. Wonderful study tool for those awaiting such training, and a great reminder of etiquette in avalanche terrain for the seasoned veteran.

Nice intro into avalanche safety

Nice intro into avalanche safety. Easy to read, although the since behind snow pack is a little monotonous sometimes. Covers the "A to Z" of avalanche safety and covers most of the bases in a general manner.

I would recommend this book if you're just getting into back-country activities, as well as a nice refresher.

Super easy to read and probably saved my life while climbing in the whites. A must-read for those who can't work in a chance at formal education. With this book and some pit digging practice, I feel much more confident although it's definitely no substitute for experience and a formal class.

Complex, changing relationships. beautifully written

A curious choice to name the two protagonists Julia and Julian.
Julia is married to Julian when they meet and eight years older. Julian – ‘the boy lolloping towards her across the Downs…He was tall and lanky with the widest grin she’d ever seen - it didn’t seem possible…. She couldn’t imagine that such a beautiful boy would fall for her.’

Much wonderful language, including ‘greasy bracelets of salami,’ and ‘the light fell like a knife’.

The plot is complex and without giving too much away much of the earlier part of the novel concerns their daughter Mira’s life-threatening cancer. Delicate, fragile Mira. Julian is full of guilt over failing to notice the signs. There are some really dramatic shocking moments. But the middle stalls a little with Julian’s grief and with his preoccupation with Firdaws, his childhood home, a preoccupation I couldn’t share.

Late in the narrative Julian disappears until a somewhat perfunctory reappearance at the end.

There are complex, changing relationships and surprises but the final plot resolutions I found hurried and implausible. A shame, because so much is beautifully written with insightful characterization.

Too slow, too disjointed, too flowery and rather shallow., full of adjectives and lengthy descriptions of just about everything.. but no storyline to speak of.........very disappointed ......

About the Author
Adrian Del Caro is Distinguished Professor of Humanities and Head of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee. He has published many books, including The Early Poetry of Paul Celan: In the Beginning Was the Word (1997) and Grounding the Nietzsche Rhetoric of Earth (2004). He has published numerous articles in journals including Journal of the History of Ideas, Philosophy and Literature, and German Studies Review. His translations include poetry for The German Mind of the Nineteenth Century (edited by Hermann Glaser, 1981) and The Gay Science (edited by Bernard Williams, Cambridge, 2001).

Christopher Janaway is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton. His most recent books include Schopenhauer: A Very Short Introduction (2002) and Beyond Selflessness: Reading Nietzsche's Genealogy (2007). His most recently edited collections include The Cambridge Companion to Schopenhauer (Cambridge, 2000) and Better Consciousness: Schopenhauer's Philosophy of Value (co-edited with Alex Neill, 2009). He is General Editor of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Schopenhauer series, for which he has translated The Two Fundamental Problems of Ethics (Cambridge, 2009) and co-translated three other volumes.

Cambridge University Press drops the ball on quality

Cambridge University Press dropped the ball on this volume. I have all the other volumes in this series in hardcover, and for some reason CUP decided to change the materials used in the series midstream. The materials used in this volume are lower in quality. The paper is not as heavy or of the same quality, and the cover material is also cheaper and not as nice (more like plastic than cloth). An easy way to realize this quality difference is to pick up the hardcopy version of the first Parerga volume (which has fewer pages than this second Parerga volume) and compare their weight. The first Parerga volume, which uses higher-quality materials, weighs more than this Parerga volume. CUP, nobody wants to pay this kind of money for cheap, shoddy materials. The use of such materials in this volume is made much worse by the fact that they differ from the materials used in the prior four volumes in the series. Now the books don't match properly. I would have been willing to pay more money to have gotten the same materials CUP used before. And publishers wonder why they are losing money?

Blake's highly original approach offers not only an excellent introduction to Dante's allegorical tales, but also a new and fresh perspective for those already familiar with the Divine Comedy.

Superb works by an outstanding master artist

This book of 102 plates is a grand collection and shows the work of Blake in various stages of completion from rough sketches, to watercolor wash, to etching, to full multi-colored complete watercolors, and to full multi-colored, multi-plate prints. Thus you see impressions and ideas in early stages of execution all the way to fully realized expressive works. For the most part, the works are magnificent. Blake was a fine draftsman and the graphic illustrative qualities of his work are strong. He has somewhat of an academic style in regard to drawing or painting the human body with the male, often nude, drawn with flowing manneristic precision and revealing a hyper-muscular approach to the male body. In other words, his male figures are often nude muscular fellows with flowing expressive movement. Some of the less developed works are exquisite in their early stages, such as the illustration of Virgil, at the request of Beatrice, assisting Dante in his quest for divine wisdom, an image of two figures cradled, protected, by huge flowing trees. Blake loves monsters and he really gets the opportunity to let his imagination go with the many demons and monsters and mythological characters that Virgil and Dante encounter. Whereas Blake can create fragile, pastel, impressions he can also create dark contrasting areas of great dynamism. An image of the lustful dead being swept across the dark indigo night sky is a fantastic image. Any artist would be content to have 10 masterpieces in their artistic career. Blake had hundreds of successful master works. The unfinished works feel very contemporary, such as a watercolor in mauve and yellow ochre where Dante asks Virgil to explain the influence of Fortune on humans. Blake creates an alternate reality for his world of hell, purgatory, and heaven are truly other realities than the lived in reality of life on earth. Blake's drawn diagram of the nine circles of hell puts most contemporary drawings to shame with its subtlety and sketchy graphic qualities. In another watercolor, Dante and Virgil approach the Minotaur and the surface colors are exquisite and the Minotaur has all the power of a Picasso monster. Dante mixes the gods of antiquity into hell. His completed watercolor and ink drawing of Capaneus, unrepentant and defiant, who was struck down by the lightning bolts of Zeus, shows the power of the finished pieces. The finished work of Neptune's son Anteus is absolutely beautiful. Overall the collection is a grand achievement and the images are outstanding. Dante was very concerned about the politics of the Papacy and Tuscany but Blake's images rises above the local to the universal.

Good, but a better quality edition would have been nice

The point to make is not that there's anything bad to say about this collection of William Blake's illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy; rather it's that the quality of this book is nowhere near what it should be.

- It's softcover, it should be clothbound hardcover.
- The quality of the paper and binding could be much better.
- There should be contextual quotations as well as explanations of the plates.
- The graphic design, beginning with the cover, is flat and unimaginative.

The Folio Society Edition of Dante's work fetches hundreds of dollars, so that level would be too much to expect. But something of the same quality as what Houghton Mifflin Harcourt produced for Randall Munroe's "Thing Explainer" would have been perfect.

We have to remember it's a Dover edition, they publish many books other publishers would forget to consider and there are good things about this edition.

+ Blake's illustrations are fascinating and mesmerizing.
+ I can't argue with the price.
+ I'm happy it's available at all!

Wonderful and Imaginative art -- nice reproduction quality

This is a beautiful book that really lets you see Blake's creative process: the illustrations range from loose sketches and incomplete paintings, to articulately finished works of art. This book does NOT contain the text of the Divine Comedy, but each plate lists the line numbers it illustrates so one can easily use it while reading Dante's masterpiece. I don't know what the customer who wrote in Italian's complaint is (since I don't understand Italian), but I give this book a top recommendation to all lovers of Blake's art.

Amy Bloom's 1993 collection, Come to Me, is filled with yearning mysteries of romantic and familial love that are far more complex than the phrase "love story" allows. The first sentence of the first story, "Love Is Not a Pie," evinces the contradictions, layers, and interconnections of her narrator's existence--and hooks the reader entirely. "In the middle of the eulogy at my mother's boring and heart-breaking funeral, I began to think about calling off the wedding." The title phrase means exactly what it says: Lila's mother didn't have a finite amount of affection and was lucky not to be forced to choose between love's accepted forms and a more unusual one: "People think that it can't be that way, but it can. You just have to find the right people." Lila realizes that she needs to get out of her engagement because she isn't ready for normality.

The unusual pervades these stories, and Bloom handles some outsized events with delicacy and humor. In "Sleepwalking," a new widow sends her stepson away after they've slept together, because she wants him to have a normal life. The author makes us aware that there's something terrible and foolhardy about this woman's decision. Several other characters find themselves in equally desperate situations, their only consolation being recollections of earlier bliss, often sensual: "It was like nothing else in my life, that river of love that I could dip into and leave and return to once more and find it still flowing." For them, memories of past happiness makes present sorrow bearable.

Bloom's remarkably consistent first collection of stories includes her award-winning "Silver Water," a sad remembrance of a mentally ill sister and the family that loves yet cannot help her. The story includes elements common to Bloom's work: female protagonists whose lives are changed through psychological trauma, often involving therapists or people embarked on therapy. This makes sense, since Bloom herself is a practicing therapist. She deftly explores the complexity of the therapist-patient relationship ("Song of Solomon" and the aptly titled, ironic "Psychoanalysis Changed My Life"); the subtle brutality of troubled families ("Love Is Not a Pie," "Sleepwalking," "When the Year Grows Old"); and the strange compromises struck by couples to maintain tenuous emotional connections ("Sleepwalking"). Taken together, however, Bloom's insights into human love and obsession tend to blur into a long and rather uniform psychoanalytic lesson, undercut occasionally by revelations. She's at her best in showing how people really think, as in a description of a self-effacing housewife's distracted thoughts during sex in "The Sight of You," or in the title story, in which Bloom achieves a soaring complexity in characters whose strange behavior eludes any simple psychological explanation.

Practicing psychotherapist Bloom has written 12 powerful short stories in a debut collection that abounds in psychological insights. Deviant human behavior is portrayed compassionately and honestly. In the story "Love Is Not a Pie," a young girl learns the meaning of love when she witnesses her mother and father's involvement with another man in a menage a trois. In "Only You," a woman who is obsessed with her hairdresser finds out that he delights in dressing up in her clothing. "Silver Water" depicts a family who must cope with the illness of their schizophrenic daughter. "Sleepwalking" portrays a moment of incest between a mother and stepson who comfort each other during a time of grief. Many of the stories feature the same characters and show the same family from different points of view and at different points in time. Recommended for public libraries.

An unflinchingly honest look at relationships

I came to know Amy Bloom in my early twenties as a subscriber to Glamour Magazine. Her column was always witty. Always insightful. Imagine my delight, when I heard her interviewed on NPR. Listening to her talk about Come to Me had me severly intrigued and I purchased it that afternoon. What a fascinating look at relationship dynamics -- I read it in a few hours. Her stories offer no apologies, only unflinching honesty. You often feel like you have happened upon people you shouldn't be overhearing as they work through their grief, anomisity, anger and fear. If you can read it with the open-mindedness Ms. Bloom intended, you will have read one of the best short story collections out there.

A wonderful collection of short stories!

Amy Bloom offers an insightful perspective into peoples' lives with this collection of short stories. She gives readers realistic & beautiful characters, unique plot lines, and lyrical writing. What amazed me most about this book was Ms. Bloom's willingness to expose her characters' emotions and flaws without explanation or apology. Through her wonderfully provocative writing style, Ms. Bloom allows readers to have their own reactions to her stories, and does so without judgment. Readers will appreciate the humanity in each of her characters.

Wonderful collection, Bloom has an amazing voice!

I found this collection by accident and didn't know what to expect. Short stories can be so good, or so bad. These stories are very good, consistently good. These are stories of people searching for something missing in their lives, well told stories with heart, soul and humor. Amy Bloom has quite a unique voice. The stories center on romantic love and family woes, but Bloom adds a spark of originality to otherwise common subject matters. My favorite stories are "Sleepwalking," "Henry and Marie," "The Sight of You," and "Semper Fidelis." If you're as enthusiastic about memorable, literary short stories as I am, then I recommend Come to Me most highly. Enjoy this collection.
