A for Effort, B for Execution, A Little Less for Content

I understand that trying to collect 1000 of any type of recipes is a daunting task, trying to do it with limited ingredients is twice as hard. I applaud the author for her effort but I think that this book falls into the quantity over quality category. I have tried several of the recipes and have not been wowed by any of them. More than a few are adequate, none were terrible, but most were just bland. I think many of them can be tweaked to have more taste. I recommend using more fresh spices to improve the taste. I'll give you an example. There is a recipe for soy glazed tofu. It has a lot of sodium and added sugar. I made a similar dish tonight. I think mine tasted much better. I pressed the tofu, cut it in strips, and lightly wiped a baking dish with some canola oil. I poured low sodium tamari sauce on top until all the pieces had some on them (probably about a quarter cup). Then I drizzle some sesame seed oil and rice vinegar on top. I grated fresh ginger on top and sprinkled some sesame seeds. I cooked at a slightly higher temperature because I am impatient (it was very forgiving). I served it with thinly sliced scallions and some cilantro. I think my version was better. I have tweaked virtually every recipe to give it more oomph. My other complaint is that the book relies too much on canned ingredients and pasta and breads. I really want the healthiest foods I can eat. I live in CA so I grow many of mine and can things like tomato sauce without sugar. I use a pressure cooker to make beans rather than using canned. I think this makes my food taste better and is healthier. I would have liked to have seen the author refer more to her sauces in back rather than store bought items. I am sure that others feel exactly the opposite and are happy that the author refers to the very same items that come pre-prepared in a grocery store.

Great for new vegans!

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a vegan "Joy of Cooking." I use 1000 Vegan Recipes on a regular basis. This is a vegan "Joy of Cooking," and offers many various recipes for just about anything you can think of. Pad thai, spaghetti, bread, tofu, ice cream, cake, spring rolls, salad dressing, etc. There are lots of comfort food recipes, but also some that may challenge the palette creatively. I really love that all of the ingredients are super easy to find in a regular grocery store (for all you vegans that only have access to the local Walmart), but you could certainly elevate the quality of your dish by buying fresh, organic ingredients.
Now all that being said, these recipes are not going to blow your socks off. They are good, they are edible, but these recipes just aren't as tasty and flavorful as the ones I find in the rest of my cookbook collection. It's just what happens with this type of cookbook. There are simply too many recipes to give attention to.
This is still usually the cookbook I use through the week though.

Wonderful!

I just spent about an hour checking out 1000 Vegan Recipes and am very impressed. I am a former caterer/chef and am pretty good at eyeballing a recipe and determining if I will like it. It is obvious from the amazing assortment of recipes that Robin Robertson is a professional chef and has years (25) of experience.
This book is jammed full of wonderful recipes! I am not a vegan, but cook increasingly so and really needed a good vegan cookbook--1,000 Vegan Recipes is it!
This book has everything, including a recipe for seitan. I just bought seitan and was taken aback at its cost--$5.00 for 8 ounces! It was delicious, however and I planned to buy it again. Now, however, with the recipe Robertson provides, I can make my own which will be much cheaper and most likely, much better!
I like the explanations for all things vegan throughout the book.
There are tons of recipes I cannot wait to make. I have other vegetarian/vegan books, but sense this one will be my "go-to" cookbook!
