Three simple approaches to meditate

I like the three simple approaches to meditate that are outlined in the book.
1. Day dream, (now I have an excuse to day dream)
2. 1000 mile stare
3. Muscle relaxation

I didn't like all the fluff around the approaches and the feeling that I was being sold something.

The day dreaming approach to meditation was new to me. The muscle relaxation in the book more of relaxe your muscles. In other books I've read the approach is to tense up one group of muscles and then move to the next. when you focus on the next group of muscles the body automatically relaxes the last group.

Over all it was worth the read. Who knows if you try the approaches you might like it.

The style is direct and unpretentious. The message is simple but extraordinarily powerful: life is short, the past and the future are inaccessible, pain and pleasure have no meaning, but inside each one of us there is a ruling faculty that is touched only by itself. Only that which makes us better capable of confronting our condition with resolution and courage can be said to be good, and only that which makes us worse and more unsatisfied can be said to be bad. The only thing that is of any importance is our own private quest for perfection, which no external power can ever destroy. This book delivers many insightful and inspirational observations about human nature and the human condition, and he makes an excellent rational argument for seeking the good and for acting modestly and continently. I cannot think or a more satifying and moving work, and it is all the more poignant because it was written by a man who wielded almost absolute power and lived surrounded by the luxury, yet managed to keep things in perspective and to occupy himself only with what truly matters. One sentence captures perfectly the spirit of his writings: "Where a man can live, there he can also live well." An extraordinary testimony of wisdom and fortitude.

Of course, this book can learn you how to meditatie but if you want to find out what meditation to meditate deeper and properly I would recommend to try read "a crossing or the drop's history" by Anatoliy Obraztsov before.

Worth reading a few times

I really enjoyed this book and I'll read it again a few more times. I like James' writing style, he tells interesting stories. In this book he mentions another book of his called "Beyond Belief" so I bought it and that turned out to be a good decision - I like it very much (haven't finished it yet). Thank you so much James Coyle for sharing your knowledge with us, much appreciated!

kinesiology must

Perfect book for every health profession involved in movement disorders...
Simple, clear and exhaustive at the same time.
compared to the previous edition this version widely enrich the subject with the most frequent pathologies explained through a biomechanical approach. Hardcover, full-colored good paper quality for a reasonable price but the quality of printing should have been better (several pages have a "blur effect" while others are perfect).
anyway a great book!!

A Good Textbook

Neumann, the author, did a wonderful job putting together a "student-friendly" textbook for those interested in rehabilitation and kinesiology. I purchased this book for a graduate course. Though I didn't have a background in kinesiology, and this was my first introduction to the subject, I was able to follow the material. The understanding that I gained through this textbook and other study aids helped me to perform very well in my class.

The book is easy to read, well illustrated and provides clinical applications. Purchase this book. You will not be disappointed.

This book is great for students learning biomechanics, it explains all the joints in the body and the muscles that act on them and how they are acting with each movement, it also states the biomechanics laws. Great for people with very little knowledge that want to understand the basics!

Fun with Words

This book is like an amusement park of words. As a reader you go up, down, sideways, back and forth. Every direction is unique and purely for fun. Skipping around from thought to thought, I laughed out loud at some and smiled quietly to myself at others. The final result was a fun read. This book made me happy. I'm glad I read it.

This is no Kramer vs. Kramer

A full two thirds of the words in this book's title are "Ayoade." Interesting, since I've never seen another book title that uses the word even once. It turns out it's a man's name. This is one of those books that should be savored in small doses - perhaps a syllable every national holiday.

I found it reminiscent of early Woody Allen, but not for the humor.

Brilliantly hilarious, although I defer to any other Amazon reviews that may have noticed things I didn't.

This is great fun.

What a gem of a book. I'm not the brightest guy. I find myself having to re-read a sentence now and then until it sinks in. But what a payoff! It's very densely and cleverly written; and worth every minute. I've been reading it a little at a time and savoring every morsel. Now I'm starting to hear his voice in my head as I read. This is great fun.

Timely and original

This is not just a brilliant addition to feminist epistemology but to epistemology period. Fricker shows that grave wrongs can be committed in at least two significant ways to people in regards to their "capacity as knowers."

The first is testimonial injustice. This is where someone is considered as less epistemically worthy or reliable because of some prejudice. Victims suffer a "credibility deficit." Examples of this is when certain minority or women's perspectives, views, ideas are disregarded simply because it is a minority or woman expressing the perspective. Fricker explores in quite some detail the different salient examples of when and how this kind of injustice occurs, why it is morally and epistemically important, the kind of harms perpetrated not only on the victims of this kind of injustice but on society as a whole, why we need to pay attention to it, and some of its social implications. For me, the most insightful part is the harms Fricker argues is perpetrated on those suffering the credibility deficit.

Secondly, there is what Fricker calls "hermeneutical injustice." This kind of injustice occurs when some oppressed group is unable to even "make sense" and to articulate their own experiences to others and even themselves. This often occurs when the group is marginalized and is subject to other related injustices such as restrictions on education and to their fair share in the public space of information. Some groups have no access to previous sources of articulated expressions of their group's experiences either because the larger society does not give those sources any focus to their plights (marginalizes those experiences) or because the group have few to none actual resources which does articulate their experiences. This may occur if the group is experiencing a new kind of marginalization and discrimination which does not have precedents in the publicized experiences of other groups. A group may not even know how to think about their experiences in a clear way because the conceptual language have not been invented or sufficiently developed. Women in many societies may not even know that they are experiencing sexual harassment and its harmful effects, for example, if no resources detailing and analyzing this kind of experience is available to them; that is, if the society at large pays such morally and epistemically important experiences "no mind" people will likely suffer from not even understanding the nature of the injustices perpetrated against them.

Much of modern society revolves around information and its control. Since that space is both finite and in demand, it is a commodity subject to the confines of justice. The world is getting "smaller" because of the spread of information and much of our social, political, cultural and economic exchanges with others will speak to the importance of epistemic justice. Fricker's highly original contribution is very insightful, well-written and interesting. It does justice to this little previously focused area of epistemology and ethics and it is extremely timely for the kind of society we now live in.

The book to make this world better for all

Amazing breakthrough ideas. Although we have experienced epistemic injustice either in the role of acting it against others, or in the role of suffering because others act epistemic injustice against us, only Miranda Fricker could see this important issue so clearly and I am really grateful to her for bringing in the open her thoughts on actually everyday observation which just passes unnoticed by most of us. Every scientist, whether in social sciences or in any other discipline, should read this book if we want to make this world better.

Very accurate sheet music

I mainly got this music book for the piano part of Keane's hit "Somewhere Only We Know". To my surprise, the sheet music seems perfectly accurate! This book doesn't do what a lot of sheet music does in cutting out the top-hand piano part in exchange for matching the vocals. Everything is there, and I am glad for that. Thanks for the great and accurate sheet music!

An outstanding contribution to the "cell group" literature

Nearly thirty years ago, as an elder and home fellowship leader in an emerging megachurch, I became deeply convinced that small group fellowships were the "wave of the future." Then, several years later, when I read Howard Snyder's "The Problem of Wineskins," my convictions were solidified.
Now, as a senior pastor, after many years of stuggling to keep our home fellowships vital, and trying to balance small groups with all the other activities of the church, I and our leadership are moving into a cell church model. The key factor in pushing us "over the edge" has been Beckham's book.
Some of the cell group books available tend to present the cell model as another new technology guaranteed to produce evangelism and church growth. In some of the literature there seems to be a tinge of dogmatism and naive promotionalism (sincere but perhaps simplistic). Beckham, on the other hand, gives a persuasive historical and theological rationale for the cell group model.
His chapters on how to implement the cell model in the local church are worth the price of the book. And his explication of the "Instant Cell Church Syndrome (ICC)" is loaded with wit and wisdom. From my perspective, this book is a "must read" for all church leaders interested in the cell church model. Once Beckham's book has been absorbed, the other books with a more functional orientation can be appreciated and valued for their good points.

House Churches or Cell Churches?

While it is nice to see that there are those in the instutionalized churches that see the need for reformation, I see a greater need in restoration. The modern Americanized church has become so filled with business ethics and principles that we have missed the clear New Testament teaching on servant leadership, authority, and the eternal purpose of the Church.
This book will offer you great insights into the cell movement. I would highly recommend this book if you are curious about how cell churches operate. If you are apart of a cell church and are still struggling with the clergy/laity system of most American churches (including cell groups) than I would encourage you to check out Frank Viola's book "Rethinking The Wineskins" (...).
The message in this book is clear, the church needs to change the world instead of the world changing the church. We must seek to return to a biblical model and pattern for the Church.

A Reformation is truly coming

This is a must read for all in the ministry who are eager to learn from the NT church. Beckham carefully takes us through church history to show how our present "One winged" church was a result of Constantine's Edict of 312AD. He shows us how the "Two winged church" is a more biblical model. I was especially blessed by his presentation of how the "two winged church" demonstrates God's Holy transcendant nature which is experienced in corporate worship and how God's Immanence is experienced in the small group setting.
