About the Author
George Rude was a distinguished historian and renowned expert on 18th-century history. He taught at universities all over the world and held many distinguished academic posts. In retirement he lived in Sussex until his death in 1992.

A good analysis of the French Revolution.

The author does a great job of detailing the stages of the French Revolution. He takes it from the initial aristocratic revolt to the Third Estate revolt, and then to Napolean. Each stage is broken down and analyzed in short 10-12 page summaries. Although the reader gets a detailed reason why something happens, there are few stories in this analysis, so one does not get how the King or Robespierre felt on the eve of their executions. What you get is why this bloody and liberating revolution actually occurred. However, the analysis is right on target and one gets a view why things happened.

This is an interesting read and the book stages detail the stages of the Revolution. This may not be reading for everyone, but it does show why and how the French Revolution happened.

A very helpful book

I consider this book to be a very helpful. If I am not mistaken, George Rude is a Marxist. However, the book is not polemical and has a rational presentation of events. Whereas other academics have a tendency of getting bogged down in the details, George Rude has a tendency of conveying to the reader the reasons why the French Revolution had an impact on not only France but the world in general. The book is also informative; George Rude has an aptitude for describing the economic situation of pre-revolutionary and revolutionary France. Thus, distributive issues concerning wages and prices come to the fore in this book. To me, I especially find the second chapter of this book helpful; it describes the history of French Revolution historiography. However, the book should be especially remembered for its last three chapters because they describe the influence that the French Revolution had on Europe and the rest of the world as well. The last few sentences of the book intrigued me because the world has changed so much in the last 200 years. Issues concerning democracy, liberty, captitalism, nationalism and socialism have come to the fore, and the French Revolution has, in large part, caused these issues to be significant. The last few pages of the book remind the reader that she may very well forget the influence that the past has on the present and the future; in order to understand the world and possibly change it for the better, it may be becoming for the individual to have at least an elementary understanding of the importance of world history and the French Revolution. A highly recommended book.

A Broad Overview of the French Revolution and it Impact

In the last sentence of his book, Rude asks of the French Revolution, " Has it not rather become a page from a history book?" This book attempts to counteract this trend with a very detailed overview of the revolution. I say it is an overview because Rude spends much more time examining political events and assumes the reader has at least a basic knowledge of the key players. There is very little biographical information and I suspect this is why some of the other reviewers said it was dry.
What it does very well ,however, is explained the ebb and flow of the revolution and the various parties and classes involved. Rather than treat Napoleon as having brought an end to the revolution it presents his rise as another stage in it. The last chapters are dedicated to looking at the lasting impact of the French Revolution and I think that this is the weakest point of the book because the author attempts to draw connection between it and the liberation movements of a century later despite the fact that there has been several other revolutions in the intervening time, (this is something that the author later concedes)I think it would have been more useful to at the implications of the Revolution in the contemporary French colonies such as Haiti. While I would not recommend that this be the first book one reads on the French Revolution, someone who already has some knowledge of the topic may find it informative.

Michael Rosen wins again - we're going on a Letter Hunt!

Michael Rosen is brilliant, entertaining, wise, and a magpie -- he collects stories.
This large book, “Alphabetical: How Every Letter Tells a Story”, is the story of the 26 letters of the alphabet (their personal histories -- yes, letters have histories!).
That is the central thread of the book.
But while Rosen tells each letter's story (A, in the capital shapes we know it) was originally a pictogram of the head of an ox, with a nose and two horns. The Egyptian/Phoenician/Semitic word for "ox" was something like, "Arr-leff". So we start with "Arr" for Arleff, and away we go.
B was a house (Beth).
C was a camel (Gimel, but never mind the C-G alternatives: this is similar to C-S and C-K as phonic alternatives).
But then, letter by letter, as Rosen explores the main "narrative" thread of his topic, he brings in extra stories that link with successive letters.

As one of the other briefer reviewers notes, the extra stories about D concern "Disappearing letters".
Try, for example, the "s" that disappears from "hostel" when we move to "hotel". The French use a circumflex accent (a "little roof") over the "-o-" to show that there is actually an invisible, disappeared "-s-". And, of course, the "-s-" we used to have, In English, and French, came originally from Latin.
Of course, how English, and French (and much more) came from Latin is another story.
By the way, a great deal of Latin came from Greek.
Many of Rosen's extra stories come from his own personal life: he has a rich cultural background.
His parents, Harold and Connie Rosen were pioneers in the educational research and upheavals that created the post-war Western English-speaking school system and curriculum that we know.

Wait a minute: this book is about the "Alphabet" not the "Alphabeta" (or could this be the "Alphabetagammadeltaepsilon"?).
But look, that "-bet" in "alphabet" comes from the Greek letter-name for what we call "Bee".
The Greek version of "B" is "beta". It looks just like our capital "B", but the lower-case Greek "b" is not much like our lower-case "b", is it?

The letter "V" is illustrated with extra stories about "Vikings".
But weren't they just thugs who murdered and plundered?
Yes, and no. They also were astounding boat, and church builders. Explorers and navigators. They were bodyguards to the Emperor of Constantinople. They created the first major Russian city. They (collectively speaking) invented "Beowulf" and other stories of dragons, and warriors. They built towns in Ireland.
Not your average thugs, eh?

Ow!
Can you see how much there is that could be said about the Alphabet?
Other reviewers have complained about the size of Rosen's book.
The plain and simple fact is that the book COULD have been MUCH BIGGER!
There is a huge amount that could be said about the alphabet, and still not exhaust it.
This is a book I wish I had written.
Rosen shares his fascination with the alphabets (and with the alphabetas, and the alephbeths, and so on), and with rich, longevious, glorious languages.
Human languages.
The book is about an aspect of human ingenuity: WRITING!
Humans are curious, clever, DIVERSE people.
Rosen's book celebrates some of this ingenuity, curiosity, and diversity.

He needs 400 pages to start doing this, and it isn't a page too long.

This is a very informative and entertaining book. It provides a good amount of detail on the key ways in which each letter of our modern Roman-derived alphabet has been developed. It also provides some insights into the ways in which all languages are "living" entities. The author has clearly spent his professional life in learning, utilizing, and creating language. He communicates his knowledge and enthusiasm to the reader.

Rosen at his most entertaining

This book is delightfully entertaining and bursting with intelligence. There is far more information on each letter than any similar study. It sets the standard. Moreover, Rosen's compassion and wisdom shine through, a really nice guy.
This is a book to savour. A month spent reading a letter a day is a month well spent. It would be indigestible read all at one go.
He places the Etruscans after the Greeks in the scheme of things, which is debatable but it alters little.
It's a good book to give as a present to any enquiring friend. It's a pleasure to read.

A good ight reading

It is a good light novel which takes you back to your younger days! Try to read it for the sake of a youthful nostalgia! The setting is typically Indian and the author emotes very well as an Indian youth. The author's style of story telling is flowing and his language is befitting the style. The story has its periodic surprises and shocks which makes it an interesting reading. However, towards the end it drags a bit.

If you enjoy reading something youthful, don's miss this novel. However, I don't really know if the novel will appeal to the international reader as the issues are basically Indian by nature.

This is one of the novels which can be described as unpredictable. It's full of romance. You will enjoy it till the end. But some characters lack the depth and female antagonist character seems confusing which makes it good for one time read.
