This statue was not made in Elk Grove, Illinois, but rather in China. It is about nine inches high. Its weight is light, and the overall appearance suggest it is made from plaster rather than stone. I also found some very small flaws.

Reputation Earned

Alfred Bester's 1953 Hugo winner is well deserving its reputation. A futuristic murder mystery that baffles mind reading detectives. Who will be demolished and what does that mean? From the viewpoint of a brilliant mind planning the perfect murder, the book is filled with suspense that keeps you guessing until the final pages - like any good mystery thriller should. Better yet, it's all wrapped up in a sci-fi world.

I've read this novel when I was a teenager in the mythical Argentinean sci-fi magazine "M�s All�". I've treasured my collection for more than 50 years. Time and again I reread the most outstanding novels and short stories kept there as in a time shell. Yet I haven't done it with this great classic until I found an old copy (and buy it) in a Buenos Aires' used book shop.

"The Demolished Man" is, arguably, the best novel written by Alfred Bester (1913-1987), wining, deservedly, the First Hugo Award for best sci-fi novel.
The plot is great: in a future universe telepathy is available to some humans, classified in three groups of expertise. Due to their ability, the best of them, occupy key posts in every human activity.
Their control makes premeditated assassination almost impossible. However Ben Reich, an industrial tycoon decides to physically eliminate his major opponent... and avoid capital penalty: Demolition.
Planning, executing the crime and escaping Prefect of Police Powell are the subjects of the book.

The way in which Bester shows, graphically, mental games and telepathic relationships is astounding. The very scarce references to technological advances, keeps the story safe from outdating.
This novel transcends the limits and stereotypes of `50s sci-fi.

Wongkong too harsh

wongkong is too harsh with this book. The only major translational error is translating "signals units" as "intelligence units". There is only one incidence of a few paragraphs being repeated in another place, and the book is not as dire as wongkong would suggest.

Will agree that it is not for the faint of heart. Would be nice to see this volume redone with photos accompanying the text, but as it stands the photo section is extensive, even if submitted as an appendix.

Would also benefit from more explanations of wartime changes and variants on the established unit strengths presented.

Not for the amateur historian.

Excellent in-depth review of German Infantry and equipment

Although this book is a little lacking on photographs, it still provides a detailed written analysis of German infantry force structure and equipment. It also gives a short history of each of the German units throughout the war. I would recommend this book to historians and report writers. Model builders who require photographic reference will enjoy the photo section at the end of the book.

Lavishly illustrated and richly detailed

Excellent primer on standard German infantry divisions (who bore the brunt of the fighting in WW II). No info on specialist units like tank, paratrooper or mountain troops, but what this book does do is give a detailed man for man description of the German infantry division in WW II, including ranks, weapons and equipment.
Translation is a little confusing in places - the Signals units are mistranslated as being "Intelligence" units, but most information will be accurate and easily understood even by those new to German Army subjects. Fascinating photos, though not directly related to the text.
Author was a German infantryman in WW II. Some interesting statistics are also provided regarding a variety of topics.

The author avoids explaining what he couldnt explain. Yet presumes to offer a "A scientific discovery"

Did the author forget this line in Exodus?

And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them; and the pillar of cloud went from before them and stood behind them. So it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. Thus it was a cloud and darkness to the one, and it gave light by night to the other, so that the one did not come near the other all that night.

Yet he would have you believe that the volcano was the smoke and fire pillar all rolled into one. Or maybe he didnt see another volcano to account for the pillar behind them? Just this fact is evidence that author avoided explaining what he couldn't and hope nobody noticed.

The whole book of natural explanations, doesent explain how these could have happened in such chronological order. Timed is what I would rather call it.
