Excellent read. I have earmarked almost every other page

Excellent read. I have earmarked almost every other page. I grew up with a controlling, toxic mother, moved across the globe to get away. I got the same type of guilt trips for years. I had a nervous breakdown every time I had to call home, thinking what else I need to answer for this time. Years passed and the behavior that was instilled into me growing up seeped into my everyday life including my work. I worked myself up to a lead position but my past was holding me back. People were walking all over me and I let it happen! I was terrified my bosses, answering to them like they were my parents. It was horrible and stressful. It took me years to gain control and get more assertive. Reading this book it was great to get some validation that I am on the right track for healing. Thank you. I know I will re-read this book many many times in the future.

Intense for empaths

Wow. This was one of the most difficult books I've ever had to read. Whereas, I grew up in a toxic home. This brought up a lot of emotions for me. Really good book, still if you were traumatized by your parents take a weekend to read it. I read the book mid-week and had to take off work for a day, because reflecting on my childhood. Its a very good place to start on the road to recovery. I have generational toxic mothers and this book actually gave me more compassion and understanding for my mother.

Peace of Mind

I once heard this quote: Our neuroses cause the most psychic distress when those who inculcated them die and move beyond argument and mercy. This book brought me a lot of peace of mind before and after my father died. It enabled me to share with my father how the past had caused me great pain, but I nonetheless wanted to move beyond that in a more helpful and loving way. He could not hear what I had to say, but being able to articulate it, after reading this book, gave me great peace of mind for many years afterwards. So, when he passed away, I had no regrets about not having tried to heal the relationship. I had done all I could responsibly do; I resolved I was not responsible for the riff that had lasted for two decades. I was free.

The characters develop in an enchanting manner and the satisfying twists make this precious gem a page turner. An honest rendition of the emotional journey of first and second generation immigrants. I am looking forward to more from this up and coming author

Very little redeeming value.....

Unless you are captivated by persistent pubescent profanity and pornography, don't waste your money buying this book or your time reading it. The book's themes are hackneyed at best, describing in nauseating detail aspects of the boys' "coming of age" and the family's "immigrant experience". I read the book through to the end, only to be further disappointed by the abruptness and predictability of the ending. The book is just another riff on family dysfunction, and I found it to be boring and offensive.....

Unique Look at the Immigrant experience

Awesome book. I flew through it! Very compelling story and well rounded characters. I have really enjoyed reading books by Jhumpa Lahiri and other South Asian authors about the immigrant experience in the US. South Haven has been one of the best ones I have read about Indian families adapting to life here in the US - no cliches and lots of honest moving prose.

(3.5) Fascinating book about the myth of Melusine

This book presents itself as a scholarly look at the figure of Melusine, best-known as the mysterious heroine of a medieval French fairy tale, but with ties to major goddesses of the ancient world. The author focuses mainly on Melusine's story as presented in A.S. Byatt's novel _Possession_, but also ties in earlier versions of the tale and other modern novelizations.
Alban's thesis is that Melusine is a survival of the ancient Great Goddess. This book is at its best when comparing Melusine to various ancient goddesses. For example, Alban's comparison of Melusine and Medusa, both snake-ladies whom one could not gaze upon with impunity, is fascinating. Also mentioned is Melusine's similarity to Echidna, who like Melusine was a bearer of strange reptilian children. Alban also studies the figures of Eve, Lilith, Persephone, and many others. It's jaw-dropping, at least to a reader like me who is obsessed with the Melusine story, how many parallels there really are between her tale and the older myths.
The downfall of this book is its unquestioning embrace of the "prehistoric matriarchy" theory. No one really knows whether people in ancient times were peaceful, feminist, "gylanic" tribes worshipping a single Great Mother. The theory has not been disproven; however, it is far from proven. No one really knows. But I think this book would have come across as more scholarly if it had presented the matriarchy ideas as theory and not as fact.

Great writing style and story telling

I don't really understand what the negative reviews are for. I burned through this book in about three sittings. I played music for over a decade and spent some time on the road so the story was very interesting to me. I love Keith's anologies and philosophical insights; especially Ray's reunion with Evan. The writing style was excellent, especially for a first novel. I hope that Keith continues to write. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves ETIDs lyrics or anyone who enjoys a deeper read.

Interesting, philisophical read from Every Time I Die vocalist

Super interesting read, takes a bit to get into but if you put in the effort it pays off. Very philisophical with some fun humor thrown in, but sad at the same time as it takes an introspective dive into the depression of an individual and how he got there. And knowing about Keith and being a huge fan of Every Time I Die, it was cool to see how this shaped up.

Keith Buckley's "Scale"

This is the story of a man trying desperately hard to live a life so fast that his thoughts and feelings can't catch up with him. A man so concerned with his sense of self that he loses himself entirely. Ray Goldman is painfully self-conscious and wields an arrogance that springs from a genuine fear of inferiority and not mattering in some grand way. Everything he does is meant to both build himself up and destroy himself, and he does both in splendid fashion.

I enjoyed the journey this book took me on and the author's distinct style of writing. He clearly admires the beat writers (specifically Kerouac) but does not seek to emulate them, which I was thankful for because I couldn't stand "On The Road". Sentences tended to run on, and the metaphors could get quite complex, to the point that I found myself re-reading whole paragraphs because I just didn't get it. I loved the author's use of opposites and contradictions to highlight how the things we feel often go against what we think we should feel.

This is not the kind of book I am usually drawn to. Stories of existential crisis and nihilistic self-defeat don't usually interest me as I feel they are mostly told from a place of smug superiority. This story comes from a place of real struggle. The author's struggle to go through the teeth-gritting pain of being honest with himself and reconciling that self with the one he has put forth to his fans and loved ones. This struggle played out in a conversation between the main character and an old friend, but I read it as an internal argument that the author was having with himself.

I felt that I gained a better understanding of Every Time I Die (the author's band) through reading this book. I was constantly reminded of the song Wanderlust, specifically these lyrics: "When they unearth these passages, will I appear to be proud? Not if you're listening close enough. Not if you're sounding it out." Chapter 23 opens with a consideration of the letter/word "I": "My entire world was in that letter, all my sadness, all my jealousy, all my guilt, and all my strength." Is this a reference to the "I" that is often used as a symbol for ETID? Perhaps.

As a fan of Every Time I Die, I couldn't resist this peek into the inner workings of Keith Buckley's mind. As a fan of great books that introduce me to people unlike any others I've met before, I was wholly satisfied with Scale.

A lot of book for so little information.

This is one of many books that is about real estate investing. Although well written it is not jam-packed with information. So many times successful authors really connect with a great book, then they do a follow up book hoping to have repeat success. This book is one of those types of books The author takes a short subject and stretches it into a book. In fact, I believe this is one of three books in this series. This book uses a lot of paper to give you a little bit of information. Here is the book in a nutshell...You make money when you buy property not when you sell it... So hold it!

If you're looking for a Real Nuts and Bolts book and how to get started in investing in Real Estate, this is it

This book is simple and something you can implement immediately. Most investment books give you a PHD but you never implement it, so what good is that. Implementation is 80% of the challenge especially with investing. It's easy to follow and understand from the investor who is starting today for the first time, to the sophisticated investor of many years. You don't need all the bells and whistles you need something simple and something that you can use and implement right NOW. I've been an investor for 30 years and a Broker/Agent and this is the E-ticket for investing in Real Estate. It's something you can wrap your head around immediately. You can tell the people who wrote this book have done it themselves and they’re not just talking about it to sell books. That’s very refreshing to see in today's world of Real Estate investing.

Great book for the library

If you are interested in this kind of real estate investment than this book is great. I would not call it all encompassing though, it is definitely lacking in some areas, but it still has great tips and information for beginners. I would say it focus more on the financial side then the day to day practices, but it does explain the financial really well. Like I said add it to the library but don't rely solely on it.
