Jean: "I've been going to a clinic and I've lost 20 pounds." ... Helen: "You don't look it."

On Columbus Day, October 12, 1923, Jean Slutsky was born in New York City. Her father was thin. Her mother was fat. Young Jean weighed only 7 pounds-plus at birth but grew steadily larger than she should, a roly poly baby, a chubby teen. She lost some weight to marry in 1947 an even fatter husband, Marty Nidetch, a happy-go-lucky bus driver. Their greatest joy was dining out together, always on the lookout for places that served free second helpings.

In September 1961, just before her 38th birthday, now a mother, 5' 7" Jean Nidetch weighed 214 pounds and sported size 44 dresses. Marty was 5'10" and weighed 265 pounds. In a supermarket that day a friend asked Jean when she was "due." Not pregnant, Jean was shaken. Within weeks she had enrolled in a New York City Department of Health Obesity Clinic, with a very rigid list of those foods and only those that might be and must be eaten. In the first ten weeks Jean lost 20 pounds but found no one at the Obesity Clinic who wanted to pat her on the back for her success. Any whining by Jean or other dieters was cut off ruthlessly.

Jean decided that she would never lose the 74 pounds the Obesity Clinic demanded without sympathetic overweight friends who could empathize with her struggle. Going it alone with no "atta girls" was not for Jean. She called six girl friends together and told them the drastic diet she was on that had made her shed 20 pounds (despite nighttime cheating with chocolate marshmallow cookies). Their first reaction: "You don't look it!" (Ch. 4, p. 41)

But the group kept meeting every week, pledged to follow the New York City diet. As Jean lectured away, part mother hen, part advocate, the group kept on growing. On October 30, 1962 Jean Slutsky Nidetch met her weight loss goal: down 72 pounds to 142, dress size from 44 to 12. And her friends did well, too.

Soon, with some legal help, Jean founded WEIGHT WATCHERS, INTERNATIONAL. And the rest, as they say, is history. Its 1961 creation, the weekly adult education, weigh-in and support group meeting, remains at its core.

I found this a fascinating read, full of insights and tips. For example, early on Jean decided there had to be a reason why some people are thin. Did it have to do with their eating style? She soon noticed that thin people put their forks down between bites. Fat people never set down a fork! They gestured with their forks. Their forks were almost an extension of their personality.

And on and on: fat people lie to themselves. Every fat person has his or her "Frankenstein," a favorite food not to be given up under any circumstances, they say. For example, chocolate marshmallow cookies, doughnuts. Jean persuaded one man to give up doughnuts until he shed 88 pounds. He did. When he was where his weight should be, he rushed out for doughnuts. But almost gagged on them, it would seem.

Traditional diets, Jean said, you can't wait for them to be over and done with -- and then regain what you lost. Weight Watchers, Jean argues, is different: not a crash diet but a new, healthy steady as you go lifestyle. You are determined never again to be separated from the new, slim, healthy you.

This is not Mrs Nidetch's first book. It is chatty, low-key, modest. She never managed Weight Watchers, the corporation. But she was its founder and remains its number one spokesman in popularity. For a simple, brief (128 pages) first person narrative, THE JEAN NIDETCH STORY: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY is a convincing retelling of the old Horatio Alger rags to riches narrative of American entrepreneurship.

In the interest of full disclosure: I am a 6' 1" 74-year old male semi-couch potato, who spends most of my days reading, writing, lecturing and teaching occasional adult education classes. If I am lucky, I do an hour of exercise a day, including tai chi. I have been a Weight Watcher for three-plus years. I lost 11 pounds on my own just before starting the program. Under Weight Watchers, with more than one falling off then climbing back on the wagon, I have lost another 34 pounds. I need to lose 31 more to hit my maximum upper weight limit of 189 pounds. Obviously, I am not setting a record for speedy weight loss.

I am also a moderately active investor in stocks. In November 2007, over the objections of my financial advisor, I bought 20 shares of Weighwatchers International (NYSE: WTW) stock at $49.98/share. The last time I looked, my 20 shares had lost slightly more than half their value. I still own WTW for the same reason I bought it: to make myself read annual reports and think about and understand both the good and debatable things that WTW is doing for shareholders as well as for its employees and for overweight people like me. My doctor has prescribed membership for me. I admire most things about WTW, but do not shill for it. End full disclosure.

A truly inspirational tome

I have quite the history with Jeans program over the years. When I was a small child in the early 70's my dear Mother joined Weight Watchers and lost 75 pounds. I remember those days quite vividly. This book transported me to that time and all those challenges my Mom faced and the way she persevered and reached her ultimate goal for health and happiness.

I really enjoyed reading about Jeans journey and her many ups and downs, her struggles and her triumphs. This book was incredibly motivational to read and I am actually rereading it again I enjoyed it so much the first time. I too became a weight watcher years ago and I was able to lose 89 pounds via Jeans program. It changed my life forever and I have never been overweight since.

If you are struggling with your weight or just plain interested in stories about the human spirit I cannot reccomend this book highly enough. Even knowing how it ends, you will be rooting for Jean throughout the book as you read her story and where she came from. She was a true entrepeneur in every way and the details of how she turned a meeting in her kitchen into a multimillion dollar international corporation are riviting.

If you've ever been on the Weight Watchers program in the past, this book will be a gentle reminder of the value of it. If you are currently struggling with trying to make changes to become a healthier person this book is an incredibly motivating tool to help get you going in the right direction!

Inspiring

I've always had a thing for reading books by successful entrepreneurs. Usually however, these were Silicon Valley magnets. As a struggling weight watcher member for years I picked up this book to hear its founder's journey and how she built a company from it. Jean's life hasn't been perfect but her drive to change her body and change her life is incredibly motivating. I think all of us that struggle with weight can relate to her challenges. She's changed so many lives. It's also interesting to hear her words written just a year ago in her twilight years at 86. Her book quotes everyone from Bob Hope and Charles Nelson Reilly to Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama.

In this work, he states that Socrates and Descartes are probably the two most important philosophers who have ever lived, because they are the two who made the most difference to all philosophy after them. The two of them stand at the beginning of the two basic philosophical options: the classical and the modern. Kreeft focuses on seven features that unite these two major philosophers and distinguish them from all others. So this dialog between Socrates and Descartes is a dialog between the fundamental stages in the history of philosophy, the history of consciousness, and the history of Western culture.

A fine and hilarious introduction to Descartes' philosophy

Ren� Descartes dies and goes to Purgatory. Socrates meets him there and interrogates him about his rationalist philosophy. For good measure, Blaise Pascal makes a cameo appearance at the end of the dialogue.

That is the hilarious setup for Peter Kreeft's excellent introduction to Descartes' Discourse on Method, which introductory philosophy students and interested laypeople can read for both fun and profit. Kreeft uses a similar setup for his introduction to other philosophers including Plato, Niccolo Machiavelli, David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, and Jean-Paul Sartre.

Descartes is the father of modern philosophy, which is characterized by a "subjective turn" from metaphysics to epistemology. He wrote in the aftermath of the Thirty Years War, a conflict that caused many to doubt the peace-making ability of religion and to seek that peace-making ability through rational inquiry divorced from religious authority. For Descartes that rational inquiry involved the application of a rationalistic method to philosophical investigation. The method began by doubting everything until an indubitable foundation of clear and distinct ideas was laid. For Descartes, the first such clear and distinct idea is cogito ergo sum, "I think, therefore I am."

From the indubitability of the knowing subject, Descartes went on to make a rational case for the existence of the mind distinct from the body, the existence of God, and the existence of the material world. Unfortunately, the cogito--at least the implications of the cogito--bequeathed to subsequent philosophy an unsolvable mind-body problem that has convinced many that Descartes' anthropology is fundamentally wrong. Moreover, far from settling debates, Descartes' rational method engendered only new debates.

The dialogue Kreeft crafts between Socrates and Descartes fairly lays out Descartes' the historical context and substance of Descartes' philosophy, acknowledges what it got right, demonstrates what it got wrong, and leaves open a number of debatable issues for the reader to decide on his or her own. Reading Kreeft on Descartes motivated me to go back and re-read Descartes, whom I first read as an undergraduate philosophy major. For me, an introduction that so motivates its readers has succeeded admirably.

Socrates Duals Descartes

One time, a young student of Socrates asked the revered sage how one becomes wise. Socrates brought the pupil to a nearby pond and the two went in the water. Then, without warning, Socrates held the student's head under the water as the frenzied young man fought wildly. Finally, Socrates freed him. The young man struggled for breath, panted, and gulped. Socrates watched coolly and said, "When you desire wisdom with the same intensity that you desired to breathe, then nothing will impede you from getting it." And in this fifth volume in the series of philosophical volumes by Peter Kreeft, the author employs Socrates to cross-examine an assortment of notable philosophers and thinkers (including Christ, Kant, Marx, Sarte, Machiavelli, and Plato) to assist the reader in gaining wisdom.

In this erudite yet accessible volume, Kreeft believes that Socrates and his interviewee Descartes are conceivably two of most significant philosophers in history inasmuch as they made a lasting impact on all the great philosophers who followed them: the ancient Greek and the one who helped birth modern philosophy.
Descartes famously said:"I think therefore I am." Nevertheless he also opined that "Everything is self-evident." Thus Socrates has many places to initiate his Socratic method in his dialogue with Descartes.

This fascinating and readable volume is reflective, insightful, and produces contemplation and enjoyment. "Socrates Meets" is a good text to help stimulate an interest in epistemology as well as general philosophy.

This book is a great read

This is written in a dialog format between Descartes and Socrates. It is a great introduction to Discourse on Method. Kreeft makes it easy for those of us who don't have much of a background in philosophy to understand what Descartes was teaching and the errors it contained. I can't wait to read Kreeft's other books in this series!

An excellent intro to the topic

Cram & Casman's Intro to Surface Electromyography explains the foundations of this difficult topic clearly and concisely. It offers a multitude of helpful hints, among the most useful of which is a comprehensive atlas of electrode placement sites for picking up EMG activity from specific muscles. This book covers both clinical and research applications of EMG.
