fine compilation of writings on bresson

last year i recieved one of the best christmas presents i could ask for: this book. while i wouldnt recommend it to anyone that isnt a bresson fan it holds plenty to mull over for those that are. while a few of the articles are dull and/or pretentious more often than not they are highly illuminating as to the director's methods. there are one or two articles devoted to each of his films and a few that are just about his films in general. this first section of the book ends with bresson's cinematographer for "diary," through to "joan of arc" writing about his love/hate relationship with bresson and an interview with the young man who played the lead in "the devil, probably." the second part of the book contains three interviews with bresson: the paul schrader, which is fidgety and odd; the godard, which is exhaustive, rambling and very enlightening; and the final one whose author slips my mind which is great but unfortunately short (conducted after the completion of what would be bresson's last film, "l'argent"). the final section of the book is basically several directors talking about why they like bresson. this section ranges from short, humorous stories (the fassbinder and aki kaurismaki) to long essays on bresson's style(malle, etc.). other directors quoted in this final section include tarkovsky, bertollucci, wenders, hal hartley, and atom egoyan.

Bresson mania

My personal hero of the aforementioned European art-movie genre -- Robert Bresson -- is the subject of a new book edited by James Quandt. Robert Bresson includes interviews with the director by fellow filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard and Paul Schrader and French film critics Michael Delahaye and Michel Ciment. There are also homages from directors like Martin Scorsese and Rainier Werner Fassbinder, as well as essays by Roland Barthes and Alberto Moravia. One might wonder why such famous and accomplished people took the time to write about a French filmmaker whose movies are not known to the general moviegoing public. The answer is that the late Bresson actually was one of the great figures in cinema. His austere directing style relied on slow and beautiful imagery and much suffering on the part of his main characters, resulting in films that, once experienced, is never forgotten. One can describe Quandt's book the same way

Buy this AKA book! my girl loved it

On my yard I would say that this book is a secret! simply because if any of them knew I got this little book for my girl they would NOT like it, you hear me. She didn't even want to buy this book, LOL, so I got it for her and this book just like the little Kappa book is what that is! Since then her friend has bought it. Trust and believe this book has info you need to know, want to know, and have to know if you plan going AKA but most importantly it is a quick reference. It does include basic info but some info is not available elsewhere as you would have to search deep long and hard to find. Overall I think this little book is about convenience and saving face on a lot of yards. Let's say you want to approach an AKA about how to "cross the burning sands" well if you don't know what that means, which this book includes all the vernacular you need to know, then you just may be flagged.

Breaking down the book: origins, founders, traditions, customs like skee wee call, official info, betrayal of delta sigma theta and the all important vernacular of ALL black greeks.

Yep you can find most of it but not all and this little book simple saves time and it is collectible something you will remember from college so I say BUY THIS BOOK as there is not anotheer book like it.

Was wanting to learn more about this secret society and this is a very informative little book. I've collected many items for black greeks amd this is one of the
best. Also, I would assume interested members would benefit because it has not just info but customs and traditions that are not spoke about in the
other books. I recommend this little book.

I'm a member of The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Yeah I've reviewed this AKA book and it may be a good book to have. Better yet you should get this book called Secrets to Pledge a Black Sorority both are must own books and worth every dollar spent!

We Really Apppreciated this Book. And so will You.

This is an outstanding story book that's fun to read and excellent at educating young children. We read something from this book almost every evening. Both my seven-year old and four-year old love something from this book.
This book gives a good selection of classic children's stories, fun poems, singable songs, wise fables, and other works that are fun to read. It also gives great introductions to American history, world history, science, art and much more. What you see in this book is what your child should be learning at an ideal school.
Since no school is perfect and can cover everything, use this book as a great way of ensuring that your chilren receive an outstanding education.
This book tells you what you need to teach your first grader, and it's good reading. Next year we will buy the volumes for second grade and kindergarten.
It's interesting that one review made a claim that this book is a little too liberal. The fact is that the editor has been closely associated with forger Education Secretary William Bennett, a social conservative. In fact, the information in this book is neither liberal nor conservative. It's just excellent and enjoyable education for you kids, based on solid empirical research...

Good Overview

Great springboard book to help if you're a homeschooler or trying to supplement your child outside of the classroom.
Language and Literature: Plenty of stories and poetry to read to your child and get them started. Weak in the phonics area. I would recommend a good phonics primer - Phonics Pathways by Dolories Hiskes (awesome and inexpensive resource and it will get your child reading fast).
Mathematics: Simple progression in math skills. I like the suggestions on manipulatives and games to do with your child, they make the learning process more fun for the child.
Science: Braod overview of many sciences. Good things to start talking about with your child before a trip to the local zoo or library to pick up more in depth information.
This book is not meant to be a complete curriculum for teaching your child, but is a nice supplement. I like the stories, poems and music. It's a great portable all in one book. The notes to parents are helpful in finding ways to teach each subject.

What Your First Grader Needs to Know

This is an excellent resource to supplement a child's education. The topics are presented in an interesting, child-friendly manner. My daughter enjoys working from this book. As for the literature section, I found it to have a balanced mixture of traditional tales and multicultural folktales. Even though many traditional fairy tales are no longer politically correct, I feel that is important for my child to be exposed to literature that has endured for hundreds of years. When a poem or novel makes a literary allusion to Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty, I want my child to understand. As for the multicultural stories, there are Hispanic, Japanese, English, Dutch, West African, German, Jewish, African American, Italian, and Iroquois selections. My daughter enjoyed reading stories from so many different cultures. I was also pleased with the math and art sections. This is a wonderful tool to use for following your child's education. Comparing the work that my daughter brings home from school to the curriculum in this book helps me know if she is on track or not.

About the Author

Patrick Weekes was born in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended Stanford University, where he received both a BA and an MA in English literature.

In 2005, Patrick joined BioWare’s writing team in Alberta, Canada. Since then, he’s worked on all three games in the Mass Effect trilogy, where he helped write characters like Mordin, Tali, and Samantha Traynor. He is now working with the Dragon Age team on the third game in the critically acclaimed series. He has written tie-in fiction for both series, including Tali’s issue in Dark Horse Comics’ Mass Effect: Homeworlds series and Dragon Age: Masked Empire.

Patrick lives in Edmonton with his wife, Karin, his two Lego-and-video-game-obsessed sons, and (currently) nine rescued animals. In his spare time, he takes on unrealistic Lego-building projects, practices Kenpo Karate, and embarrasses himself in video games.

A Loch Less Fun

In my review of the first book in the Rogues of the Republic series, The Palace Job, I wrote that while there was no requirement for a sequel, if the author could come up with a sufficiently clever idea, I'd enjoy seeing this gang back in action. Well, I got my wish...

and was in many ways disappointed.

The gang is all here and back in action in what is less a comedy caper story than a relentless chase, from a temple full of furious monks to a monster-infested library to a booby-trapped museum to a speeding train besieged by assassins to an airborne winner-take-all card game to the climax back where it all began. The problems? For a number of reasons it was a lot less fun this time.

First, at the end of the previous book all of the main characters appeared to have paired off romantically; at the beginning of this book only two of those relationships had succeeded, leaving the rest of the gang in many ways frustrated and miserable.

Second, a lot more people, especially innocent people, get hurt or killed in this book, or at the very least the main characters spend a lot more time wallowing in depression about it. Between that and the race against time nature of their mission, the Angst while perhaps not thick enough to plow is thick enough to stick to everything. The result is a lot less smartassery and a lot more Doom and Gloom.

Third, a stinging betrayal takes place in this novel that wasn't a matter of mind control or magical compulsion but rather a conscious choice, arguably a choice that was made back before the events of the first book, which results in something of a continuity conflict. In any event it is depressing and downbeat.

Fourth, an all too common these days, (intelligence?) insulting stereotype shows up in this book: the Token Closeted Homosexual, whom by ironbound politically correct decree is required to be the kindest, noblest, most decent, most virtuous, and once you are alerted to the existence of, the most blatantly obvious character in the entire series. Anyone who has read the first book now knows who I'm talking about even though said character was portrayed as hopelessly heterosexual in the first book, posing yet another continuity conflict. The problem with such stereotypes is that even when positive rather than negative they mess up a story by standing out from the more genuinely drawn characters like a sore thumb, a modern author's "Look at me! I'm noble and brave!" moment that actually suggests more gutlessness than anything else.

Note to Authors: If you want to earn any genuine courage points, try outing Voldemort instead of Dumbledore, and see how much praise you receive.

Unlike the first book, this book REQUIRES a sequel to tie up all the loose ends, and while I'll probably read it, I won't be looking forward to it with the enthusiasm I once had for these characters and this world.

Less heist, more action, same Loch

About the Amazon rating: I'm using the Goodreads' equivalent of "liked it" (3/5). Consequently, it appears on Amazon as though I gave 'The Palace Job' the same rating as 'The Prophecy Con.' However, it should be noted that my Goodreads' rating for 'The Palace Job' was "really liked it" (4/5).

Loch's adventures continue as she endeavours to prevent a war with the Empire by recovering the elven manuscript she retrieved in the first book. Unlike `The Palace Job,' however, there is no single big heist but rather a string of short ones as Loch and her team encounter setbacks posed by the many and varied interested parties. That's because Loch herself is being hunted by factions in both the Republic and the Empire (in an effort to replicate Pyvic's chase of Loch in `The Palace Job' but with characters nowhere near as engaging) while trying to outsmart a rival party also keen on getting their hands on the manuscript. Consequently, this book is much more fast-paced and action-packed than its predecessor what is sometimes to its detriment.

Character-wise, the relationship between Tern and Hessler makes for some witty exchanges/situations easily taking the spotlight in this book. Loch and Pyvic's own could have made for an interesting read if it had been explored at all but the story decides to separate them early on thereby limiting their interaction to a handful of scenes that don't really build on their relationship, nor do they add much to their characters I might add. The rest of the cast is serviceable and the book benefited greatly with the introduction of a dutiful dwarf (whose name I can't remember right now) tasked with recovering the elven manuscript from its would-be thieves. It's a pity we didn't get to read more about him.

Nonetheless, the plot revolving around the manuscript itself can be confusing at times given the rather hectic pace of the book, particularly when a second manuscript comes into play to explain the first one. It's a messy affair that doesn't quite fit in retrospect what is to be expected with so many players and agendas. It probably won't affect your enjoyment of the book, however, and may even encourage you to give it a second, more thorough, read as is my case.

To sum up, `The Prophecy Con' scales the heist elements down a bit in favour of longer action sequences and the introduction of more characters perhaps in an attempt to set up the stage for book three. It's a welcome return to the universe created by Patrick Weekes but it may leave you unfulfilled as likely as not.

Such an amusing story

I was so excited to read this book since I loved the first one, and the funny thing is I only discovered this sequel through a happy Twitter coincidence. I didn’t know this book was coming out until I talked to someone who was reading the first book, and I looked up a detail, and noticed this book. So I bought it, downloaded it, and read it right away. And then joined the Twitter conversation again to confirm when book 3 was coming out.

This book has as much humour as the first book, and makes for a highly amusing read. My favourite are the “your mother” jokes, although there are not nearly as many in this book. The situations the characters find themselves in continues to escalate in highly amusing ways, but is always believable within the confines of this world.

It’s hard to talk about the book or characters without just straight giggling. There is lots of adventure, and the story is never dull. It’s one of those “sweep you up and entertain you” reads that is a lot more fun to read than review. I’m just going to suggest you read it yourself. You will not be disappointed. Except that it ends and book 3 won’t be out for a long while.

About the Author

David Fennell teaches and researches mainly in the areas of ecotourism and tourism ethics. He has published widely in these areas, including sole authored books on ecotourism programme planning, a general text on ecotourism, and tourism ethics (he has edited two other books). Fennell is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ecotourism, and is an active member on editorial boards of many academic journals.

David Cruise Malloy, PhD, is a professor of applied philosophy in the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies at the University of Regina, Canada. His primary research focus is in the realm of ethical decision-making, leadership, and ethical climate in healthcare and organisational contexts. Malloy's research is funded by both the Social Science & Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research. He has authored numerous articles in ethics and ontology. This is his fourth text.
