About the Author
Jeff Coakley is a nationally rated Chess Master and onr of Canada`s leading coaches. He has been teaching chess to young people for 18 years, in Toronto and Halifax, as well as on the Internet. Many of his students have been national champions and competed successfully in international youth events. He is also the editor of Scholar`s Mate Magazine and an active organizer of children`s chess tournaments.

Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant.

You will not find this book up at your local B&N bookstore.

Rather than be disappointed, I am actually glad. I feel that anyone who gets rewarded with a treasure like this ought to have looked around or taken a little effort to know of its existence before they laid their hands on it!!!

I can't stop gushing about how good Coakley's books are for players ramping up to an intermediate level and want to be absolutely sure they have no holes in their chess knowledge. (I'm about USCF 1579 at the time of writing this and I feel that the exercise positions in this book have so much to offer me.)

The delivery of exercises ( 9 per page ) and the quality of the answers at the back are very impressive. A tactics book that has non "find the mate or find the best move to win" positions is a rarity these days.

His Number 9 position on each page offers a wealth of instruction if you haven't seen those positions before. I've even started to document those in my own training notes, as positions that I should know COLD in order to be competitive at my level.

Overall, one of the finest tactics+non-tactics exercise books I've seen.

Chess Tactics

The main part of this book consists of 100 pages of exercises with nine diagrams on each page. Three diagrams are devoted to checkmate problems; three are win material type of problems; one is a defensive problem ("White to move and not lose"); one problem is more general; and one problem is an endgame problem. The solutions are in the back of the book and are very detailed. They often give not only the winning line, but also the reason why other moves don't work. As a chess coach, I've looked at a large number of books which teach tactics, IMO this is perhaps the best I've seen for students

Superior Instruction for Lower Rated Players

This is part of an excellent series by Canadian chess instructor Coakley. This book contains tactics at a level that many lower rated players never master. You need to be able to SEE relatively simple tactics almost instantly at the board, and better yet, you need to see the possibility of those tactics before they occur. This book will help you with its well chosen examples and fine explanations. As a bonus, you get problems on strategy, defense, and endgames. The breakdown by category is 300 checkmates, 300 'win material' problems, and 100 each of strategy, defense, and endgame problems, all with insightful and detailed answers. If you are a relative novice, or if you are that typical adult player stuck for years (or decades!) in that 1200-1500 USCF range, serious study of this book could give your rating a real boost! Highly recommended.

About the Author
Arthur Sandeen is professor of higher education at the University of Florida. He was elected president of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) in 1977. Sandeen is the author of numerous articles and book chapters.

Margaret Barr is professor emerita in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. She is the author or editor of numerous books and monographs including The Handbook of Student Affairs Administration, Second Edition, with Mary K. Desler from Jossey-Bass.
Together Sandeen and Barr have over forty-five years combined experience as university vice-presidents prior to their retirement.

Aimed at the Higher Ed Student Affairs crowd - but well done.

Was required to have this for a graduate course. It is much easier and quicker reading than a lot of course texts. Overall it is a well done book. Definitely aimed at the higher ed student affairs crowd. Not sure it is a book to read for fun, but if you do read it, the authors do definitely provide some insight into the complexities of student affairs work.

Great fun and interesting

Unlike so many Hollywood biographies/autobiographies, this book contains an enormous amount of fascinating information about the Golden Age of Hollywood and familiar names of the great performers of the era appear frequently throughout the book. The author utilized an interesting approach and devoted alternating chapters for Tony Martin and Cyd Charisse.
As interesting as the book was, it became increasingly difficult to read the chapters "as told by Tony Martin" as he excessively referred to all his "big-name friends", all the favors he granted and the money he spent on gifts through the years...a very egotistical man, indeed. The beautiful Cyd Charisse, however, told her story in a more controlled and subtle manner. Despite my slight criticism, this book was great fun to read and a wonderful window into the world of old Hollywood.

How to make a great marriage

I've always thought Cyd Charisse to be the best female dancer to ever appear on film, and I'm also interested that she and Tony Martin made their marriage last for 60 years, an unusual feat for Hollywood stars. Although he comes off as somewhat egotistic, she is definitely charming and makes the book a worthwhile read. You can understand why he was smitten by such a lovely lady. Her dancing reflects her early classical training as a ballerina in the russian school, but she added so much flowing grace to her movements that she developed her own unique style. They really had a wonderful life together - a lot of fun and very supportive of each other.

"The Two of Us" (Tony Martin and Cyd Charisse, with Dick Kleiner: 1976 - Mason/Charter Publishers, Inc.) is a highly interesting book. It covers Mr. Martin and Ms. Charisse's life up to 1976 - I wish an update could have been written!

From an editorial standpoint it must have been a challenge to produce a book with two voices, so to say, but on that level it succeeds very well. Mr. Martin is portrayed as a talented singer and an extrovert, and Ms. Charisse a polished performer and excellent companion. Due to the cost factor and evident scarcity it might be better available at one's local library - but it is well worth tracking down.

A good read.

Best since the NT

I have been discipling people for 40 years and this is the best manual I have ever seen. It divides the discipling process into faith-sized steps and encourages the disciples to take them. It also helps disciplers to evaluate where on the road to maturity their disciples are and suggests what to do to help their disciples take the next step. It grounds its ideas in the Scripture, but then illustrates them with true stories from daily life. We are using this resource as we attempt to provide each member of our church with the kind of individualized spiritual coaching Paul says he gives each of his disciples in 1 Thes 2:11. If Roger Bannister could only break the 4 minute mile barrier after he got a coach, how much more does each one of us need personalized coaching to run the race God sets before us? The Real Life Discipleship Training Manual is a wonderful resource for the Holy Spirit to use as he leads you to obey Jesus' last command to make disciples.

Highly valuable to develop leaders

I have used this workbook with multiple small groups and it has been very valuable. I do not recommend using it with a mixed group of people who are at different stages in their spiritual development. This workbook is most valuable when used with those who are highly motivated to be used by God in a relational context to influence others. Use it with leaders who want to influence others in their spiritual development. Warning this workbook will make you think differently about what it means to be a Christian and disciple others. If your idea of discipleship is sitting around with a bunch of other Christians discussing obscure aspects of theology or having an innocent Bible study with little life change then this will challenge you. Great workbook for a pastor to use with his deacon or elder board.

Excellent tool for developing maturity in faith

This is a much needed and excellent resource for Christian leaders equipping others for the work of discipleship. It is a 12 week study with practical applications for participants to grow spiritually in discipleship. It is not intended for brand new believers, rather it is geared toward believers who have some maturity of faith and are desiring to learn a practical way to disciple others. I've used the book with several groups now and will continue to use it. I would give it 5 stars for the content but the binding on the edition I purchased is terrible and the book began falling apart during my second time using it. We purchased quite a few and all of the bindings are terrible. But again, the content is worth figuring out how to keep the book itself together.
