Written as a series of journal entries beginning with J's diagnosis and ending with his ongoing treatment and support programs, this book outlines the enormous pain and confusion that the immediate family of a seriously ill person must endure every day, from making near-impossible choices about medications that treat symptoms but have terrible side effects, to calling the police to help commit a child against his will. Hanson, a communications professor at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, writes candidly about his family's sincere efforts to honor and respect—against all logic and rational thought—the delusions and feelings of the son they know can be a gentle, loving person with a talent for connecting with children and a knack for fly fishing, while remembering that "the burden of caring can be too much to bear unless you learn to care for yourself as well." He is the author of A Place to Shine: Emerging from the Shadows at Work and Cultivating Common Ground: Releasing the Power of Relationships at Work. Dan is currently a member of the faculty at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, where he teaches courses in Communication.

An honest account and relatable for families schizophrenics.

As a sibling of a person with schizophrenia, I directly related to this book. I highly appreciate the perspective from the parents point of view as it made me understand what my own parent's journey probably felt like. Although Each persons journey is unique, there are definitely universal emotions people go through when a loved one suffers from this disorder. I appreciate the family sharing their story. I'm trying to get my mom to read it but she's not really a book reader. I did however find it therapeutic. At 32 years old I'm still working daily on acceptance and love for my sister as she is.

Everyone should read this. Schizophrenia is more common than we know. It is best to have some understanding, which this book offers, probably better than any other book I've seen on this subject. Thank you, Dan Hanson and all the Hanson family.

It seems a bit dated. Brain science has moved fast. But their attitudes, as caretakers,are nothing short of sainted.
I think caretakers of the mentally ill are the heroes of our time.

Giving a Voice to the Dead

Over the last two centuries, peat cutters in Northern Europe have been uncovering bodies that are in such good condition that it was first thought that the people found were the victims of recent crimes. Actually, the bodies were preserved by natural bog processes. Radioactive carbon dating has shown that the bodies are two thousand years old. In this work, the bog bodies are explained in all of their sometimes gruesome details. The book is illustrated with many photos.

The bog bodies were immediately seen to be murder victims, but who were they and why were they killed? The author, Miranda Aldhouse-Green, who is an archaeologist, presents us with the facts surrounding the bodies. Modern forensic techniques have revealed how the people lived, what they ate over their lives, what they ate in the days before their deaths, and how they were killed. We learn that they were not the victims of common crime, but were deliberately put to death.

The author presents some interesting theories and conclusions about the deaths. This book dispels any thoughts that I may have had about ideal pre-industrial society. However, as civilized as today’s Northern European descendents may seem, I am not sure about how far the world has progressed.

Worthwhile treatise

A strangely circular book in that the author constantly circles around the topics, touching on a topic then deferring it to later, then referring back to it. She may touch upon a subject in chapter one, but defer the full conversation about it to chapter 8, and then in chapter 8 refers back to chapter one. Part of the issue is that in reality, it's not possible to solve "Europe's Ancient Mystery" as the title optimistically proclaims since there's simply not enough evidence from that time period to do more than provide some educated guesses. But Aldhouse-Green provides some fine educated guesses, focusing on a variety of topics to help provide context and insight into the mystery of why these bog bodies were often brutally murdered and buried in a bog to preserve them. From examining why the bog preserves bodies to considering their last meals, the author covers a lot of ground in this book. At times topics feel a bit repetitive because of her focus on nuances and her willingness to circle back to topics, but she does just enough to persuade the reader to persist to the end of this book.

Excellent book for one who is obsessed with Bog Bodies (like I am). I love the information about the Iron Age. This book really brings to life the cultural setting in which the big bodies lived and died.

About the Author
John Lavenia is an author, speaker and trainer whose teachings come from real-world experience and wisdom gathered over twenty years of studying human potential. Born in New Jersey in 1970, his early life was that of a struggling youth. The Difference between a Conversation and Experience

There is a qualitative difference between teachers who are simply speaking/writing about success and one who is actually on the path and creating success. John's book is clearly written from the place of one who is creating wealth and success in his own life. That level of authenticity and congruence is readily evident as you read this book. This is not a conversation around or about success, it is a conversation from success. This distinction alone makes it a worthy read, a table or bedside companion to further one's own success in their world.
Now, it is one of my top books on success and wealth.

It's NOT Okay!!!! John is part of my Concious

I finished reading this book one weekend while camping and Fired My Boss on Monday!

This is the truth. While I was already in business for myself for the past two years, I still did some consulting work and therefore had a boss, sort of.

Then, this conversation with John(reading the book), he made things very clear in the chapter, "It's Not Okay". I had to do the right thing and make thing right for me, my family and eveyone else I was helping reach success. By the end of our conversation, I realized that I was not in integrity and Integrity IS everything.

About the Author
MICHAEL J. ECONOMIDES is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Houston. Until the summer of 1998, he was the Samuel R. Noble Professor of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A & M University and served as Chief Scientist of the Global Petroleum Research Institute (GPRI). Prior to joining the faculty at Texas A & M University, Professor Economides was the Director of the Institute of Drilling and Production at the Leoben Mining Institute in Austria (1989-1993). From 1984 to 1989, he worked in a variety of senior positions with the Schlumberger companies, including Europe Region Reservoir Engineering and Stimulation Manager and Senior Staff Engineer, North America. Publications include authoring or co-authoring of 7 textbooks and more than 150 journal papers and articles. Professor Economides is involved in a wide range of industrial consulting, including major retainers by national oil companies at the country level and by Fortune 500 companies. He is the founder and a major shareholder in OTEK (Australia), a petroleum service and consulting firm with offices in five Australian cities. In addition to his technical interests, he has written extensively in wide circulation media on a broad range of topics associated with energy and geopolitical issues. KENNETH G. NOLTE has held various senior technical and marketing positions with Schlumberger since 1986. From 1984 to 1986, he was with Nolte-Smith, Inc. (now NSI Technologies, Inc.). Prior to 1984, Dr. Nolte was a research associate with Amoco Production Company, where he worked for 16 years in the areas of offshore/arctic technology and hydraulic fracturing. Dr. Nolte holds a BS degree from the University of Illinois and received an MS and PhD from Brown University. He has authored numerous journal publications and has various patents relating to material behavior, drilling, offshore technology and fracturing. Dr. Nolte was 1986-1987 SPE Distinguished Lecturer and received the Lester C. Uren Award in 1992.

Reservoir Stimulation

"Reservoir Stimulation" is not only the bible of hydraulic fracturing; it's a comprehensive text including skin analyis, well testing, rock mechanics, well logs and acidizing. I only wish we could have a text as professional as this that encompasses subsea and deapwater completions issues. Hopefully a Ken Nolte or Mike Smith of deepwater completions will step forward and write it.
