Again the text of Purgatorio follows Petrocchi's La Commedia secondo l'antica vulgata, but the editor has departed from Petrocchi's readings in a number of cases, somewhat larger than in the previous Inferno, not without consideration of recent critical readings of the Comedy by scholars such as Lanza (1995, 1997) and Sanguineti (2001). As before, Petrocchi's punctuation has been lightened and American norms have been followed. However, without any pretensions to being "critical", the text presented here is electic and being not persuaded of the exclusive authority of any manuscript, the editor has felt free to adopt readings from various branches of the stemma. One major addition to this second volume is in the notes, where is found the Intercantica - a section for each canto that discusses its relation to the Inferno and which will make it easier for the reader to relate the different parts of the Comedy as a whole.

Robert M. Durling is Professor Emeritus of English and Italian Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Ronald L. Martinez is Professor of Italian at Brown University. Their works together include Dante's Inferno and Purgatorio and Time and the Crystal: Studies in Dante's "Rime petrose."
Robert Turner has been a professional illustrator for thirty years.

Purgatorio is Pretty Interesting

In the second volume of Dante's Divine Comedy, Purgatorio, Dante continues his journey from hell into purgatory, continuing to be guided by the skilled hand and mind of Virgil. Dante must climb up the Mount of Purgatory, beginning at the bottom with Ante-Purgatory, then the seven terraces - seven levels of suffering and spiritual growth - as associated with the seven deadly sins; at the very top is Earthly paradise. Just as in the first volume, Inferno, Dante continues to discuss politics and the Church in general, as well as relating to his own experiences during the writing of the Divine Comedy in the fourteenth century. Familiar characters in Dante's life again play a part, as he makes his intentions of them all too clear. It is in this volume that Dante is reunited with his long-lost love, Beatrice.

In this shorter introduction, Robert M. Durling and Ronald L. Martinez go into some detail on when this second volume was likely begun, how and when it was exactly written and how Dante was influenced by events and happenings in his life in the writing of it. Just as with the first volume, detailed notes are provided at the end of each canto, explaining locations, historical references, and short biographies on the people mentioned and what relevance they had to Dante. With these priceless details, any reader can pick up this translation of the Divine Comedy, and not feel lost or overloaded by all the historical setting, peoples and details, but are skillfully guided along Dante's unique journey.

At the end of the text are further detailed notes and fifteen short essays covering Dante's political views, his respect and use of Virgil and Ovid, his original conceptions of homosexuality, and on moral growth, to name a few. Durling and Martinez also explore similarities and possible linkages with the three volumes in analyzing similar cantos, their possible relations to each other, as well as the numbering system used in each volume. At the end is a bibliography and extensive index, allowing the reader to travel about the text freely and with little hindrance.

With this second volume, Durling continues what he began with Inferno, keeping the reader hooked with this accurate translation, along with the original Italian on the left-hand page, as Dante's true skill as a storyteller and descriptive writer are brought to light as never before.

Great Literary Work and Staple in for Anyone Studying Italian

I took a class on all of Dante's divine comedy and absolutely LOVED it! I was an Italian minor in college and so I really looked forward to this as it's a super important literary work and a staple in Italian art, literature, and culture.

This was definitely the middle of the three books in terms of how much a liked it, but is still a great literary work. I don't know how someone could just read one of the books and not finish all three. As for the translation, I though it was very accurate. My professor spoke fluent Italian and English and he seemed to find this translation very useful. He also has a doctorate in Italian literature so I really trust his opinion, a very intelligent man who knows the Divine Comedy inside and out.

I think a lot of the complexity of this work was lost on me because I never intensely studied literature. However, my class had half literature majors and they offered really great insight into this work as a whole.

The Best Translation Yet

I have owned several editions of The Divine Comedy but this edition translated by Martinez and Durling is the best I have seen so far. I am able to read some degree of the original Italian by Dante and feel that I can make a reasonable comparison of this new translation with previous ones. Now, I look forward to acquiring the Martinez and Durling translation of the Paradiso in the paperback edition as soon as it is available.

good for kids and adults

I give a couple esl classes here in Mexico and am using this book with a college student and a group of 10-12 yr olds. We first do the vocabulary, then read the chapter which then I have them tell me each sentence in Spanish and practice with the cloze method and put the story together using just the phrases under each picture (but without using the pictures). It's helping me a lot with my limited Spanish as well. The chapters are divided into simple present and past tense. Some of the chapters on driving the car and using the answering machine don't apply to anyone, but all in all it seems to be good material.

About the Author
Benjamin Pierce received a B.S. in Biology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. Ben is currently Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair at Southwestern University, Georgetown, TX. He is a population geneticist who conducts ecological and evolutionary research on amphibians. Ben has authored a number of articles in research journals and several books, including: The Family Genetics Sourcebook, a guide to genetics for the layperson; Genetics: A Conceptual Approach, a general genetics textbook; Genetics Essentials: Concepts and Connections, a brief genetics textbook; and Transmission and Population Genetics: A Short Course, a textbook for courses in transmission and population genetics. Ben is a member of the steering committee of the 21st Century Science Coalition, a group of scientists who support strong science standards for Texas public schools. He is the President of the Texas Academy of Science, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, and is a Fellow of the Texas Academy of Science. He currently serves on the editorial board of Bioscience. He has received research and teaching grants from the Natural Science Foundation, the W. M. Keck Foundation, the 3M Foundation, the National Park Service, the Williamson County Conservation Foundation, and the National Geographic Society."

A Great Text

I can't believe that I am about to say this, but this book is a great read! It can be a little dull at some points, but considering the subject, it has a great flow. There are also practice problems and concept checks at the end of each chapter. There are only answers to the starred problems in the back of the book, but you can always ask your professor about the problems that don't have the answers. I can't believe I enjoyed reading a genetics book so much! It's a tough class, but this book does make it better.

He has written Arabic For Dummies in an attempt to reach an even wider audience with the aim of fostering better relations through education.
He holds a degree in Economics from Middlebury and has extensive experience in the arena of international investing. He is a registered investment advisor and is a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers. Amine is currently working on his third book, Investing in Commodities For Dummies (Wiley Publishing).
Amine is an avid traveler and has visited over 15 countries across the Middle East, Europe, and North and South America. Aside from his interest in languages, business, and travel, Amine enjoys biking, rollerblading, playing guitar, chess, and golf. He lives in New York City.

Use the CD--the two transliteration systems are confusing

I'm very much in favor of the "X for Dummies" concept. It would be wonderful to be able to simplify Arabic. However, I returned this book to the bookstore shelf after a quick glance at the inside cover, which listed some survival phrases, and a quick thumb-through. The transliteration system is very misleading (that is, the Arabic written phonetically in 'Latin' letters). Actually, there are two transliteration systems in use. In one column is listed the word or phrase in a very scientific and accurate system. In the next column the author gives a supposedly simplified Berlitz-type transliteration such as is used in phrase books for tourists. I had a very tough time interpreting any of the utterances just by looking at the "Berlitz" column. The system used in that column is neither scientific nor an effective "Berlitz"-type system. The most glaring example I saw is his assertion that the "kasrah" vowel-marker is pronounced "like the long 'e' in 'feet' or 'treat'". According to him, the Arabic word for 'girl' is 'bee-neht'. The British picked up this word during their long sojourn in the Middle East, and they spell and pronounce it 'bint', with a short 'i', which is exactly how it should be pronounced, even if it can have a derogatory connotation in British English. Another example with the 'kasrah' is the number 'six', which the author writes 'see-ta'. 'Sit-ta' or even 'sit-tuh' would be more understandable, as without the double 't' sound and short 'i', it just doesn't mean 'six.' His 'kah-leb', 'dog', should be written 'kalb' or 'kelb'.

The author has great credentials, and I have not listened to the CD. Maybe the "X for Dummies" editors imposed the "Dummied down" system on the book. It's too bad when an attempt at simplification makes the subject matter more difficult

Great for folks who don't want to mess with the script

This guide is exactly what it says it is- Arabic for Dummies. If you are not comfortble with the Arabic script, or just want to learn the basics of speech, this is the book for you. This is also great for travelers who want to get beyond just being able to say hello. The book is easy to read, has intresting cultural tips and put together well. As a new arabic student, it was nice to have a guide that was completly transliterated, but if you truly want to understand Arabic you are going to need to write it!

Not bad for very beginners

I am little more than a beginner and I've seen a lot of Arabic textbooks. Some reviewers were too harsh in my opinion.

First, it's a simple guide and no stress introduction. Dialogs are good, with 2 rates - natural and slow. I'd prefer ALL dialogues to be recorded, not just selected as it is very important.

The simpler version of standard Arabic is chosen with no case endings, which is the feature of spoken dialects.

I wouldn't use 2 versions of romanisation but only one - standard and I would provide the Arabic text as well, at least for reference.

It's not classical or Koranic Arabic but it's a more or less standard Arabic of modern media, also used by many foreign learners and it's not colloquial either (not spoken dialects). It's probably very difficult to choose a version of Arabic to suit all learners.

Thought provoking, well written

John Fiske is a professor at the University of Wisconson-Madison and has done a fair bit of research concerning culture, its portrayal in the media, and its effects. This book, (Media Matters) takes a different perspective and does a good job of exploring what causes political change, how that political change affects people and the role that the media and dominant culture plays in this process. Fiske does a good job of explaining his position and backs up his writings with examples that most poeple can understand and relate to. Fiske has written many books concerning popular culture and the effects of television on culture and many of those same concepts carry over to this book. If you have read and enjoyed his other writings, then I think you'll find that this book follows in the same tradition.
