Excellent Book on SCM

I am currently using this book in my Master of Professional Studies in Supply Chain Management program at Penn State University and I have found the book to be very useful. When I compare this textbook with the books I used when I completed my MBA in 2003, I feel this textbook is by far one of the best in regards to content and useful information. The only suggestion I would make is that the authors should include a CD with Excel templates for all of the models in the book.

Also, do not think of this book as only being useful if you're a student. I used this book while I was managing Dell's supply chain and I find myself referring to the book now that I am a consultant.

A Brilliant Analysis of Three "Key" Interrelationships

As Sunil Chopra and Peter Meindl explain in their Preface, the purpose of their book is to help those who read it to "develop an understanding of the following key areas and their interrelationships: the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and [the] analytical methodologies for supply chain analysis." I think their material will be of greatest interest and value to executives who are now centrally involved in management of larger organizations' supply chains. However, I think their book will also be of substantial benefit to others who are directly or indirectly involved as strategic allies in those supply chains, those who can also help to ensure effective management of them.

Chopra and Meindl carefully organize their material as follows:

Part I: Building a Strategic Framework to Analyze Supply Chains
Part II: Designing the Supply Chain Network
Part III: Planning Demand and Supply in a Supply Chain
Part IV: Planning and Managing Inventories in a Supply Chain
Part V: Designing and Planning Transportation Networks
Part VI: Managing Cross-Functional Drivers in a Supply Chain

I was especially interested in the final part because one of the greatest challenges when establishing and then sustaining an effective supply chain is to take into full account the need to get all participants in proper alignment, especially when cross-functional resources to achieve to achieve mutually-beneficial results. In Part VI, Chopra and Meindl respond to questions such as these:

1. What is the role of sourcing?
2. How to achieve design collaboration?
3. What are the most important "drivers" of pricing and revenue management?
4. What is IT's role?
5. What does effective risk management require?
6. What are the major barriers to effective coordination?
7. How to build strategic partnerships and trust between and among stakeholders?

Many readers (I among them) will also appreciate the provision of a "Summary of Learning Objectives" and "Discussion Questions" at the conclusion of each of the 17 chapters. Credit Chopra and Meindl with fully achieving their objectives when they set out to write this book: To help their readers to understand the strategic role of a supply chain, the key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the analytic methodologies for supply chain analysis.

The concept is too dry, the examples are quite redundant, and has so many unnecessary mathematical formulas.

Its very dry, full of words with a little graphs/pictures on it. I thought it was a good read, but most chapters have mathematical formulas and equations which is unnecessary to learn the concept of supply chain.

This book is perfect if you are a student, and have a professor teaching it, instead of reading it on your own.

i ordered this book for my M1 histo/cell bio course and it was a great review source. The question style in there was great for my NBME mini-board. It made sure I knew the questions at a more advanced level than the mini-board, so when I walked into the mini-board, it was much easier.

One of the best books I have ever seen.It is not only very well written but it has a treasure of wisdom for all surgeons.In fact ,it is the work of a master, with the great quality that it explains every thing in a most understandable language, and what to say of the treasure of applied anatomy it contains.I do not have words to express and thanks Dr Skandalakis for delivering us in different places of the world his tremendous experience At the same time an excellent edition ( hardcover,beautiful drawings,very good quality of paper).It is the kind of books I feel fortunate to have got

During the First World War, Louis Penningroth volunteered to serve with the YMCA to bring charity, faith, and hope to prisoners of war in Europe. In those days, the Y was one of the premier non-governmental organizations in the world, renowned for its ecumenical and apolitical policies. Under the leadership of evangelist John Mott, the YMCA succored prisoners without bias or favor in most of the warring nations. Soon after WWI, at the height of the Russian Civil War, Britain, France, and the United States landed troops at Murmansk and Archangel in an attempt to overthrow the Bolsheviks. For more than a year, these Allied soldiers fought a series of arctic battles with the Red Army. During this campaign, a number of Allied prisoners were captured. Because Allied governments had broken all diplomatic relations with Russia, these prisoners of war were forgotten and abandoned by their governments. When Penningroth proposed going to Russia to bring relief to the Allied prisoners, John Mott said no, fearing the response from the Allied governments. The Y was no longer apolitical, and Penningroth was forced to choose between his career and his conscience... Based on Louis Penningroth's papers and ten years of research, this "novel history" sheds light on a moment when a man of faith, with the wisdom of a serpent and the gentleness of a dove, braved the wolves of the world to live Christ's admonition to his disciples: "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me."

Bravery

This was written by the nephew of the man that the book is about. I know his aunt, the man's daughter, and have been waiting for over 30 yrs. for this book to come out. I was so excited when she called me to say it was out on Amazon Kindle. I got a Kindle for Christmas, so I downloaded it and it came immediately. It is written as a novel, but is actually more of a history. If you are interested in Russia and history, this is a great way to learn more. Very few people know about this period or the heroic part he played in getting prisoners out of Russia.

I would highly recommend this book for all ages. The book is about the YMCA, WWI, the resilience of the human spirit, and the sovereignty of God. A great read for anyone who decides to read this book.
