A survey of first encounters

The book gives an overview of a selection of first meetings between Europeans and other cultures. It has several thorough chapters on (e.g.) the Aztecs, the Tahitians and the Japanese, and more episodic chapters on many more. Several chapters on native Americans may have special interest to North American readers. While containing many fascinating tales, it does not, however, reveal any systematic approach. It is also rather superficial and disappointingly ethnocentric in tone in many places. The potential of drawing on the many 'case studies' in the book to extract some broader insight is not utilized. Hence, its analytical aspects are weak, to the point of being non-existent, and its usefulness for graduate students and researchers accordingly rather limited.

Steven Hyden has been one of the best music writers in the game for years

Steven Hyden has been one of the best music writers in the game for years, so I've been eagerly awaiting this book from the moment it was announced. Luckily it doesn't disappoint. Hyden delves into music rivalries not to make grandiose declarations of who was better than whom (although, hey, that can be fun too sometimes!), but to try to get to the bottom of what these rivalries tell us about how we process music (and everything else around us). It also serves as a great source of music history. While I was familiar with many of the stories included, I also learned quite a bit about some artists I'd never really thought twice about before. Hell, he even got me to take Oasis seriously! Above all, it's a hugely entertaining read and by the end you'll be rooting for your favorite artists to start brawling with each other so we can get another volume at some point down the road.

Hyden does a great job of using the notions we attach to our ideas of ourselves and how that relates to our music choices. Hyden doesn't really takes sides, with the exception of Oasis vs. Blur, but examines the sociologies associate with some of the trivialities of those arguments. A great exploration of the human condition.

A funny and entertaining book that contains neither too much poptisms nor cynicism. Filled with many of the same qualities that make Chuck Klosterman's and Rob Sheffield's books pleasures to read. I'll definitely keep this author in mind for future reads.

Best Vulgar Coloring Book I Have Ever Bought!!

[[VIDEOID:849f16d9937f198d6f1eb45127a15553]]I want to start out by saying that I own many adult coloring books but this is my first ever purchase of a James Alexander one and it definitely will NOT be my last. I am so impressed by his designs and style and cannot wait to get more of his books. Not only did I like this book because of it's vulgar and rude sayings, but because the detail around them is absolutely wonderful.

I personally love coloring animals and design and around the phrases in this book are pictures of animals and tons of detail. He really outdid himself on this book. Being my first book by James Alexander, if this is an indication of how all his books are, I will be the proud owner of them all some day.

In my video I show you all the designs and pages in the book so you can see just what I'm talking about. They are amazing! The only difficult thing is reading some of the pages before they are colored because there is so much detail surrounding them. However, when you color them, they totally "pop out" at you. The pages are a tiny bit thinner than normal but I always just place a few sheets of paper or a piece of poster board in between them anyways to ensure nothing goes through to the next page. There are no perforations in this book and it's got a lot of pages and designs in it. I absolutely would recommend this book and if I could give this 10 stars, I would have!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!

Love me some James Alexander adult coloring books! This newest is AWESOME! The book is nice and thick with free downloads for more! It's not just boring curse words, it has cute little animals and fun things to color! Great way put some love into a memo when someone just needs to hear the truth! Haha! I love all his books and this one, I think I'll have to say MY FAV! thank you!!! Highly recommend this one- :)

Hilarious and Relaxing

I am happy that I decided to add this coloring book to my collection! The book has 39 different designs featuring some great vulgar phrases. In addition the book, you also receive links for bonus designs to print. The quality of the book is great. It has nice pages and crisp lines. Perfect for any coloring medium of choice: markers, pencils, etc. All the designs feature some critters (raccoon, squirrel, dog, etc.) and various flowers/leaves. Add this book to your coloring collection - you won't regret it!

About the Author

Cynthia Franklin, Ph.D., is Professor and Stiernberg/Spencer Family Professor in Mental Health at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work, where she is Coordinator of the clinical concentration. Dr. Franklin is an internationally known leader in school social work and school mental health practice and has published widely on topics such as dropout prevention, clinical assessment, the effectiveness of solution-focused therapy in school settings, and adolescent pregnancy prevention. She served as the past Editor-in-Chief of The National Association of Social Workers' journal Children in Schools. She is co-principal investigator of a solution-focused, alternative high school project for dropout prevention funded by The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health.

Mary Beth Harris, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Central Florida. As a social work practitioner in the U.S.-Mexico border region for twenty years before entering social work education, she brings a bicultural perspective to her work. Her research and writing continue to reflect a strong bond with Mexican culture and with the needs and concerns of Hispanic populations. Dr. Harris teaches across the social work practice curriculum. Much of her research and writing centers on school social work. Her current clinical research is on Taking Charge, a school-based life skills intervention that she developed for adolescent mothers, promoting high school graduation and financial self-sufficiency.

Paula Allen-Meares, Ph.D., is Dean, Norma Radin Collegiate Professor of Social Work, and Professor of Education at the University of Michigan. Her research interests include the tasks and functions of social workers employed in educational settings; psychopathology in children, adolescents, and families; adolescent sexuality; premature parenthood; and various aspects of social work practice. She is the principal investigator of the School's Global Program on Youth, an initiative supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; co-principal investigator of the NIMH Social Work Research Center on Poverty, Risk, and Mental Health; and a co-investigator on an NIMH research grant.

Great for Interns and Clinicians

The book is a wonderful resource for anyone working in the field of school social work, or even in working with children and family services. Do not be intimidated by the size of the book. The size is reflective of how much valuable and effective information you can use as a clinician, administrator, intern, or other social work professional.

Off the bat, one will observe that the layout and composition are sharp and concise. I was impressed with the chapter titles, which are helpful when you are searching quickly for an intervention or resource. The chapters are short and to the point, unlike many textbooks that make a point to drag out topics and ideas. This is especially great for clinicians, who can use the book to brush up on techniques without having to take a whole course on the subject. In addition, there are several chapters that detail how to present and what to present to shareholders, faculty, and other interested persons in the field of school social work. As a clinician, administrator, or teacher, the book is easy and fresh.

For administrators, the book presents an easily accessible resource to help teachers and school faculty with working with the different age groups within the school system. Similarly, it presents the information in a digestible way where school faculty can get practical use out of the techniques and interventions. In addition, the book is a good resource for Professional Development topics, as well as for Crisis Team interventions.

It's also a great resource for interns. When you are just starting out, it's hard to keep track of all the interventions that you will learn. The way the chapters are divided will help not only while working in field, but also when writing paper. The chapters explain what population the intervention works for as well as the research behind the intervention. This is especially useful for grasping an understanding of Evidence-Based Practices (EBP). Since the mental health field is shifting towards the use of EBPs in delivering mental health services, this book will help interns find and use effective EBPs while in the field. And, to be honest, the chapters are quick reads which will lessen the reading load for graduate students.

There aren't really any gripes with the book. Besides the size--it would work better in a more concise form, perhaps over several volumes--I would highly recommend this book for anyone social work professional, school administrator, or student in the field of school social work.

"The Truth About The Gita" by the famous journalist and rationalist V.R.Narla is one of the rare books critical of the so-called Song Celestial or Bhagavad Gita. V.R.Narla may be rightly described as the H.L.Mencken of India, and shared the latter's iconoclastic spirit and courage. The Bhagavad Gita is an over-rated text which is unsuited to the modern era. V.R.Narla has correctly described it as "anti-human rights and anti-human values". The Bhagavad Gita degrades women, Vaishyas and Sudras [effectively 80% of India's population] by terming them "persons of sinful birth"; it extols the hideous caste system; it exhorts Arjuna to kill, to kill in cold blood, to kill as a matter of caste duty. It is a bundle of impossibilities and absurdities; for example, it claims that Yagnas or sacrifices can induce rainfall! It is full of interpolations, inconsistencies and contradictions, and reads like a hotch-potch, a cut-and-paste job. V.R.Narla has done well to cut through the hype and expose the Bhagavad Gita for what it truly is. It is a pity that the book is not easily available in Indian book stores. Every Indian student must read Narla's invaluable book.

Advantage Buddhism!

I am not a Buddhist. But I respect some of its ideals the same as I respect some of other religions. Off late, there has been a trend of Buddhism to wrest its lawful place from Hinduism. To this end, they have slowly started sowing the seeds of suspicion among the followers of Hinduism by asking them to believe in archeology and related sciences in an attempt to disprove the edifice in which Hinduism stands. Some do it subtly by insinuations without directly attacking Hinduism. Whereas some others mince no words. The latter is rarely done, while most of the literature from Buddhism employs indirect way of denying Hinduism in the guise of professionalism, science, and archeology.

Really, while the other religions are busy squabbling with each other about who is superior, the Buddhists are quietly making plans for world domination.

This book, however, is more direct and the author seems to be rather bold in his assertions. It was published after the author passed away. It deserves couple of stars for boldness, but suffers greatly on the veracity of the claims as well as suffers from the correct knowledge of the Gita. It may be claimed by the loyals that the author is not a Buddhist to make the book comes across as neutral, but his effort shows his fondness for this faith.

Pure speculation and of no value.

what authority does the writer have to speak outside his own area of knowledge? This book is pure speculation and of no value. A closer and more accurate look at the significamce and meaning of the gita would be to approach the literature in its original vedic context not neo-"hindu" misconceptions. Thanks Narla for perpetuating ignorance in the world of academia.

A stunning history of Irish women's migration

This superb book presents women's stories from three waves of emigration from Ireland to America, stories that carry each woman's distinctive voice and experience. The author contextualizes the stories in relation to a particular place and time in history, in the 1920s, 1950s and 1980s, with a view to changes in social, economic and political trends in Ireland that affect women in particular. It is, simply, a very readable account of lived experiences, as well as a compelling, stunning portrait of Irish emigration. This gem of a book captures a history that could easily been overlooked. It is a timely and telling book in a time of global migration.

After seeing the movie Brooklyn with Saoirse Ronan, I was curious to learn more about the different experiences Irish women had in the past when they immigrated to the States. This book proved a wonderful way to immerse myself in their authentic stories, all of which were heartfelt, insightful, and strengthened the connection I feel to my own Irish heritage.

As a proud Irish American, the stories in this collection not only taught me a lot about the history of the Irish diaspora from a female perspective, but they also shed light on the impact that these women had on the country they came to call home.

Women give voice to emigration from Ireland to the USA

I really enjoyed this book. It is well written, clearly argued and the individual stories of the women who left Ireland for the USA in 1920s, 1950s and 1980s come to the fore. And what stories: of loss and love and life gained in a new country. It is fascinating to see how women coped with the environment in the USA as it changed over the years. The insights the author gives on the Ireland they were leaving is devastatingly accurate. This is an important book. If you have an interest in the relationship between Ireland and the USA or the waves of emigration from Ireland to the USA, you should read this book. Make sure you purchase the Twenty-Fifth Anniversary edition (published July 2015), it has been extensively updated.

I first heard Dave Carder at the Moody Bible Institute's pastor's conference in 2000. After attending his workshop about counseling situations involving marital infidelity, I returned home and immediately ordered his book. I was not disappointed.
Torn Asunder was written for those somehow connected to marital affairs, including prodigal spouses, their mates, pastors, counselors, or concerned friends. It is easy to understand, thoroughly evangelical in conviction, and based on the author's practical counseling experience and keen observation. It offers clear direction and principals upon which to build.
The book is divided into three main sections. The first division, "Understanding Extramarital Affairs" contains five chapters which distinguish types of affairs, causes, and factors that contribute toward improper relationships. The second subdivision boasts six chapters and is titled, "Healing from Affairs." The last three chapters tie up a few miscellaneous loose ends and are sectioned off as , "Special Circumstances."
The author writes clearly, simply, and informatively. He provides only a few necessary statistics (e.g., 50 to 65% of husbands and 45-55% of wives have had extra-marital affairs by the age of 40) as well as some surprising insights: "Young wives today are actually having affairs at a faster rate than same-aged men..."
Some of Carder's material is questionable. For example, the author describes the types of personalities that are more affair-prone than others without backing up his claims through documented studies. Most of what he says in this volume, however, does ring true to reality.
Carder offers a lot of meaty information. A few helpful statements include: "In sporadic, longer-lasting affairs, the spouse will need about two years to recover..." and, "The only lasting remedy is for the infidel to feel the agony he has caused the spouse." He does not minimize the pain and anger involved in these traumatic situations.
Carder views infidelity as not just indicative of a troubled individual, but rather indicative of a troubled marriage relationship involving both partners. He writes, "The goal for both to figure out is: what emotional and physical nurturance did the infidel receive from the affair that was unavailable in the marriage?"
I recommend this book to those struggling with recovery from infidelity, pastors, counselors, people-helpers, or anyone interested in a Christian perspective as to the causes, prevention, and recovery of marital affairs. It is thorough, sensitive, clear, balanced, and faithful to the Scriptures.

Good book, But.....

This is one of the better books I've read lately. It has helped me deal with the anger I felt over what happened.

But I did have issue with a couple of points in the book.

The book is written with the husband as the infidel. I know its difficult to write such a book and remain gender neutral, but this point mad the book harder for me to read and conncet with. Men and women are different in what they need and desire. The way the book is written it appears to not explore why women have affairs. Granted an affair is an affair but the underlying causes are different for men than they are for women.

This book says that the faithful spouse must take partial responsibility for the affair if healing is to take place. This is out and out bull. The faithful spouse may have contributed to the conditions in the marriage that lead up to the affair and needs to take responsibilty for that, but the infidel CHOSE to have the affair. No matter how bad the marriage is its no excuse for an affair. An affair is strictly a choice by the infidel and no one else is responsible for those actions.

This book says that the best way to assure that there is never another affair is to show your wayward spouse the pain they have caused you. Supposedly remembering the pain they caused the faithful spouse will keep them from straying again. I would want my wandering spouse to not have another affair because they love me not because they would inflict pain on me.

Other than it was a great book and anyone recovering from infidelity in their marriage needs to read this one.

One Trader's Salvation

After trading full time for about 2 years, I was just about to give up and throw in the towel. I had to face the bare facts: I was losing money, plain and simple.

"What had I done wrong?" I was asking myself. "Haven't I read just about all the trading books everyone is supposed to read? Haven't I tried just about every trading system imaginable? Don't I truly have the passion for trading? Haven't I had several fairly long and satisfying winning streaks?" The answer was definitely yes, yes, yes, and YES again to all these questions. So, how come I'm not making it? That was the REAL QUESTION.

Then I heard about Vadym's new book, The Master Profit Plan. Intriguing title, I thought, so I bought a copy. And, to my pleasant surprise, after reading just the first few pages, NEW HOPE was already springing up in my heart. Here is finally a book that is NOT about how to implement somebody else's system, but rather a book about how to design and implement your own system! My own system! What a novel idea! The more I read, the more excited I became. I began to realize that the missing ingredient needed for my own success was to GET TO KNOW MY OWN SELF! What are my talents? My limitations? How much time do I have for trading? How much do I need to make on a daily basis? How much can I afford to risk per trade? Am I scalper by nature, or is swing trading better for me? Or maybe it's a combination of the two? Do I like breakout plays, or am I more comfortable with reversals? What data do I really need to track in my daily journal?

The author helps you answer all these questions, and many more, through the ingenious use of flowcharts (Mind Maps) that will help you quickly and easily map your own plan. There is much more to the book, with topics ranging from trading psychology to basic technical and fundamental analysis. And as a bonus, there are several real life success stories from other traders who have "found themselves" and are trading their own unique plan.

AND FINALLY, as for me, I've been trading successfully for several months now, and with a plan that is unique to me. Vadym Graifer's The Master Profit Plan has truly been this trader's salvation. Thank you for writing this book, Vadym.

The Master Profit PLan

I wish that this had been the first or second book I read about daytrading for a living. It would have saved me alot of money.

Daytrading, at least for me, is tape reading, plain and simple. The book stresses that. Erase the outside noise and watch the tape. If your right, great, if not get out fast (no hard feelings, it's not personal).

Also, as discussed throughout the book, I finally forced myself to set up a written trading plan. I read it every morning prior to trading. It has helped re-inforce my discipline.

Very good book for daytraders. Especially liked the stories from actual traders. Seems many of us go through the same problems.

Think of it as a college 101 survey course

Think of this book as a 101 introductory course in college. It's the basics pulled together in one place. The author introduces the reader to all the necessary facets of trading from the psychological to the tactical and administrative aspects, as well as a bibliography of significant trading texts all traders should read, if not have in their library.

Instead of wading through the myriad websites and books out there, start here. It ain't practice makes perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

This book will keep the aspiring trader from developing some bad habits that can later be hard, as well as EXPEN$IVE to break, and help the struggling trader clean up his methods and approach. It will guide you through "first things first", and how to prioritize and define the steps in your development. It gives you a roadmap to get from point A to point B, so you don't have to figure out the map for yourself.

This book is not for the advanced trader looking to broaden his toolkit, unless he/she is looking for a good basic review manual, which frankly, is a good idea to have.
